Gearing

Post by simmo404 »

Hi all
Ill be purchasing some BFG 33x10.5's shortly for Gen1 89 SWB auto 2.5TDI import.
Wondering what options are available in the gearing department? Currently I think the T/case & final drive ratio is 1.944 & 4.625. Been thinking about the 2.85 in the T/case, I recall that this can be done, is this the case?
If so where do I get one and are there any tech sections around. Seen some brief posts that imply instructions are on the way...
Anyone else done these mods on this model paj?

Thanks in advance
Simmo.

Check on the firewall plate for the diff ratios.
I have an import and its diff ratios are 4.825 (wide body model with flares and standard 32" tyres)

For everyday driving the change in diff ratios will turn the 33" tyres in BOTH high range and low range.

Transfer case gears only change the low range gearing. Marks adapters now advertise low range gears for the Paj and they would be able to fit, Job done?

The firewall plate says 4.625. Currently running 31's and low range feels so high already. So when I get the 33's on in a couple of weeks...

Just looked at Marks adapters, Approx $1200 for 2.85 gears for the T/case not including installation.

Im thinking it would be more worth while to change the gears in the diffs. J-top paj would the 5.29's fit, it looks like they would going by the tech bible? Can you pick them up new? or is wreckers the way to go?
Cheers

For low range do the t-case gears before the diffs. Dirving around normally you'll have no worries turning the 33's.

Going from 4.625 to 5.29 will give you a reduction of 14%. So in low 1 you'll have a crawl ratio of around 39:1.

Going from a 1.9:1 to a 2.85:1 tcase ratio will give you a crawl of approximately 51:1, which is plenty slow, even accounting for the larger tyres. So in other words, your low range will be about 30% lower with the tcase over the 5.29.

Much better way to spend your money...IMHO. :)
