auto fluid in t case

can auto trans fluid be run in a hilux gear driven transfer case, i am running it behing an auto and i thought if i run same oil in both there would be less chance of the oil be contaminated.

gear oil for the transfer case is 80w +, transmission fluid 10-20w from memory, and if the oil is to thin then the gears/chain etc... will wear much faster and cause more heat etc and more prone to leaking i would think.
thats my train of thought on the matter any way so i would say a BIG NO

actualy i run 30-40w engine oil in my gearbox and transfer in my patrol for smoother shifting doh i forgot about that I havent change it in a while should check it to see if its milky as i have being playing in some mud lately its never leaked a drop of oil either exuse my first post go the tranny fluid

Many tractors run auto trans fluid in their gearboxes, diffs and hydraulic systems.

Dont have my spec chart handy at the moment to say which ones etc.

The viscosity ratings change for different "types" of oil. An 80W gear oil viscosity isn't double the thickness of a 40W engine oil, so it's possible a 20W trans oil is acceptable thickness for a manual trans.

FWIW, Mitsubishi specified an auto trans fluid for the 5 speed BW box in some Sigmas...

Lots of late model gearboxes use trans oil as the balking rings are lined with the same material as auto trans clutches, such as the Tremec 6 spd in Current Ford and Holden.

late model patrols use tranny fluid in the transfer case and the early patrols use 70/80 and i think they are the same transfer cases i may be wrong though

They are the same transfer case, no changes apart from some missing backlas gears in the later models.

i don't really like the idea of running auto trans fluid in the transfer case.

they specify dextron auto fluid for late model patrol transfer boxes

Old xw and xy falcon 3 speeds used trans fluid in there box's as well. My old case backhoe/tractor used trans fluid in its gearbox as well. I think trans fluid doesn't loose its viscosity and lubricating property's when hot like (normal) oil does.

auto tranny fluid is more of a hydraulic type fluid hence why it is used in auto boxes, in the later boxes they r a different set up. i no when my bro had a t5 box behind the windsor it farked up cause of the lack of lubrication the tranny fluid provided.

i used to use auto fluid in my sierra t-cases, it does the job better than normal gear oil. also in gear boxes run a mix of auto and gear oil as it makes it run cooler and shift nicer..
