Maxidrive Lockers.

Maxidrive Lockers.
I've come across someone selling complete rover axles with maxidrive locking centres.
What're peoples opinions on these compared to the ARB's etc?
The other problem is the axles are 83 vintage, so the rear housing will have to be swapped to make it fit my truck (dampers point one forward/one back before 85). Are the housings usually modded to fit the maxidrive unit?

I assume you are talking rover axles?
Maxi-Drives are excellent lockers, very strong and very reliable. I only know one person who ever had a problem, and that was because he routed the vacuum lines too clost to the exhaust when he did the install (himself). I have NEVER has a problem with mine, and I have used and abused it for about 6 years (installed it myself).
Advantages over ARB lockers:
The light only lights up when they are fully engaged (not when you turn on the switch like the ARB).
No seals to wear out
Come with stronger axles
No compressor needed
Disadvantages:
Axle housing must be modified to fit one
Need to remove stub axle when removing halfshaft with locking dog splines (and special halfshaft needed on one side)
Fronts engage and disengage slower than ARBs (but only a problem in a comp vehicle)
So - the housings have holes cut in them and a mounting block for the actuator welded on. If you want to use your housings, you will need to buy two new mounting blocks and a template (showing you where to weld them) from Mal. There may be some mods to the centre housing, depending on which year-model locker is fitted.
Also - if the lockers are very old - i.e. 15 years or more, then they will have EN25 axle shafts, which are not as strong as the newer AMS6418/HY-TUFF axles.

Bit of a pity they came up now really.....Just after I got my disco sitting on the nissans
......oh well
I'd go for it kiwibacon there locked front and rear and they will be just as strong if not stronger than nissans and will require much much less modifying to get them to fit in your rig.
Go for it

BTW, Turner 6 pack.

Neither of the Maxidrive fitted axles would fit without work anway.
The back was from an 83 so has one damper mount facing the wrong way, the front actuator would hit my engine sump.
The actuator is supposed to be mounted at the front, mine is and it's an 87 Rangie Hi-Line (was in an 83 Rangie).KiwiBacon wrote: Neither of the Maxidrive fitted axles would fit without work anway.

Land Rover- The Collingwood of 4WD's!!!!
Yeah it's on the front with a slight upwards angle. Not an insurmountable problem, but having to screw with both ends took enough shine off that I bought another bike instead.Aquarangie wrote: The actuator is supposed to be mounted at the front, mine is and it's an 87 Rangie Hi-Line (was in an 83 Rangie).

to add to the bmx, XC bike, commuter heap and trials bike
I've recently adopted a mates moto "If it doesn't get ridden, it gets sold".
DH sled has been ridden twice in 8 months, time to rebuild the parts onto a something that can be pedalled up.
My trail bike is another turner, was the factory 5-spot prototype but now has 6" rockers.
So why would it hit your sump??KiwiBacon wrote:Yeah it's on the front with a slight upwards angle.
