5.29s or front air locker

Post by psycronic »

I'm tossing up between sticking with the 5.29 gears or doing a diff swap to a fit an air locker to the front and the 4.88 gears I would have to change to.

Is it worth the effort to the diff swap or would the 5.29s be better use offroad. (I want to retain super select)

I would say if you want to fit bigger tyres go with the diff swap first. But if you keep standard size tyres go with the diff lock. I suppose it depends what kind of driving you do...

If you run 33"s + I'd stick with the 5.29's especially if you have a 2.5TDI.
This will give you the lowest diff gearing you can have (with standard Mitsu parts) for offroad work.
If you need/want to go lower with the t/case for low range there's always the 2.85 gears for that.

I'll definately be fitting the 2.85s for the transfer, but I don't think I'll be going over a 32" (265/75R16)

Most of my driving with this is club stuff and touring (maybe some comps like J8 or a nav run)

Shorti, I've already got the 5.29s, I would have to swap the diff to get the diff lock.

Would 4.88s be that bad with 32s in the 2.5?

yeh mate im in the same position as you at the moment with my 2.5tdi.
i wouldnt mind getting a front air locker but just not sure of the amount of effort or work it is to change diffs.
im currently running 32's and it handles it well, but im thinkin the diff lock might be worth the investment

Hi Bitsamissin

Could you advise me what is the stock transfer gear ratio for the Gen 1 LWB with the 2.6L engine? I'm on 33's with the 89' 2.6L Starion engine front stock diff, rear factory locker, both 4.875, stock transfer. Thanks.

There are only 3 Pajero t/case low range ratio's :-
- Gen 1 2.6 & 2.3 & 2.5 = 1.944
- Gen 1 & 2 3.0V6 & 2.5TDI = 1.925
- Gen 2 2.8TDI & 3.5V6 = 1.90
- All Gen 3 = 1.90

can't, I already have the 5.29s, to fit the air locker I would have to swap to the larger diff out of a 3.0 V6 manual, which only has a max of 4.88s

No J top paj - you have the 9.0' smaller diff. 5.29's = small diff & 10 bolts around diff head. Larger 9.5' has 12.

We told you that last time!!

The answer is a gen 1 3.0 front diff into which you fit a rear 5.29, the gen 1s are low pinion

You keep your super select option as that is a function of the t/case.
You will have to use manual hubs with the low pinion front diff so will loose the automatic front diff actuation when you select 4wd hi instead you will have to lock in the manual hubs.
