removing rear axles
removing rear axles
my rear diff is buggered and i am trying to replace it. the problem is i can't get the axles out, they won't budge. my dad has been holding a mallet against the end part and i've tryed to hit it with a sledge. the wheels and the cover over the brakes are off and the 8 bolts were off and the nuts on the back of the brakes were off. now the nuts and 3 out of the 8 bolts on the diff are back on now. what am i doing wrong?
ok what i do is put the brake back on then put the wheel on with 3 nuts and make the real loose grab hold of the whell and push it and then pull reel hard you use the wheel like a big slide hammer if this doesnt work put the wheel tight and bash the shit out of the back with the sledge works for me
Dont be scared give it a go
thanks mickbj42. i still couldn't get them out. i'm going to exchange the centre for another one at suzi wreckers. i'd take you up on ur offer if i knew what ratios i have in my diffs, but i have no idea and the wreckers told me that the ratios could be one of at least 3. i think i'll put it back together and get the wreckers to do it for me tomorrow.
I know they have a workshop, but i wouldn't be letting that particular wreaker anywhere near on my car. And, I am not the only person that is of that opinion. And when you say they do springovers......we all know that anyone can do a springover. It just depends on what standard/quality you are prepared to accept.

what model suzuki is it ? wide or narrow track?

you never asked me what ratio it was
crisis over!
i got the axle out yesterday morning finally, and also found i had a stuffed bearing on the left axle. i took the diff, and axle with the stuffed bearing and replaced them with good ones for under $200 which i thought was decent as the second hand parts are almost new in condition and were in my budget. i've now replaced them and happy to say i've never driven a sierra that was so quiet in the drivetrain.
mickbj42, if i had known for sure that u had the ratio that was in mine i would have come to you. thanks for all ur help.
thaoldman, have u or someine u know had bad experience with suzi wreckers? what's wrong with them? i feel they have helped me out quite well with what i've needed. although they're prices are too high for most things.

Thanks
Jason
Thanks
Jason
Markil, i have bought some bargins from a suzuki wrecker in your area, but i have also been sold 2 sets of sierra axles that turned out to be not sierra axles. They were bought as spares and it was not untill we tried to fit them that we relised that they were wrong (too long). He did finally swap them over but the point is that he claims to be the best (he will tell you this by the way)and he should have known what he was selling.
Also, his prices are never consistant. So if you get him on a bad day, expect to pay a premium.
And I have seen how badly the spring-overs (on 2 cars) that they have done by that particular wrecker perform on the track, and in my opinion their workmanship leaves a lot to be desired.
I now buy my parts from Suzi-Sport (now at Seven Hills) who are usually a bit dearer, but i find them a lot more dependable than the other bloke.

inconsistant prices at suzi wreckers? never.
i bought a diff centre from them about a year ago and it cost me $300. this time i got one for $150! same goes for windscreen frames, except they're prices doubled rather than halfed.
i guess i've been lucky with getting the correct parts from them, no problems yet.
