Double Motors on a High-Mount Winch?

Post by -ET 4wd- »

G'day all,
Was wondering if anyone out there can help me with double motoring my high mount?
Any pics, details or people to speak too about it would be good.

Cheers,

Steve.

There was a big thread on here somewhere with a number of different designs. Two that I know of are the Gigglepin 2 motors in parelle and the Ontrack 4x4 series design. From what I have heard the series desgin has proven to be pretty reliable. Heard some mixed reports about the Gigglepin design. But like the Ontrack setup, it may have been early R&D problems.

These guys are poms, but theres a couple in Aust. Pretty sure Mike Smith's rangie has this setup.

Ontrack in East Kielor Melb has a setup, but they dont have pics on there website. But it has the motors in series. Theres atleast 3 cars running this setup. That has proved to be reliable. Teams I know running it are Shreq (turbo 4.8 off OL, Birdy and GQHOON (GQPETE off OL).

These look good but is anyone running a duel gearbox and motor setup and have they got any pros and cons except for the free spool?

All the ones I have seen have rattled themselves to death. There OBC cars though. Not sure why they failed. I would have thought they would have been easier to make stronger. Cant remember if those that I have seen fail had tie rods or not though.

Gigglepin set up looks very nice. lots of pommy pounds though. ouch.

The main problem i can see with running two gearbox's is weight. i've carried my high mount when fitting and it dam near klled me. As for two of them running on one drum. Would you really want that much wieght hanging out front.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

gettin to the finish gate winching faster than anyone else outweights the weight factor i reckon.

Good point Daisy

There is always mid mount winch too. which would give the best of both worlds.

PGS may reply to this anyway, but they run a dual gear box set up on thier Zook, seems to work pretty good from what I saw at Cliffhanger.

winch

Post by henry »

I saw gqpetes car winching up a hill at alpine 06 and there was a big rock half way up, the winch pulled that hard it nearly pulled the rear wheels off the ground. And it didnt slow down one bit. Other cars up the same hill struggled when they hit the same rock and it nearly stopped their winches.
I ought to report you to the f#cking RSPCA neville.

have also heard of a certain solonoid doing this, ouch.
i wired 12v switching into 24v switching solonoids and it didnt like it. bloody no info on the solonoid to say if it was 12 or 24. 2 motors running flat out until they self destructed.

Thanks Heaps fella's for the replys!
I was looking a Birdys rig and noticed the 2 gearboxes and 2 motors, is he running 24v?
I have a 8274 and i have another older one, how hard is it to do the mods to the second gearbox to get it to work?
Or can i send them both to someone to get it done?
I like the Gigglepin jobbie thats looks tough!
I would have got back to you all earlier but me and the missus were racing this weekend at Mud,Dust & Music, she got first in standard class  and i got 11th in open :x Farkin car yards!

How does the 'in line' thing work?
Are the 2 motors butted up against the back of each other?

Geez im full of questions! :D

So does that Mean you are disconecting the gear from the end of the drum or are you disconecting another gear from in side the gearbox and with two gearboxs you are only running one brakeshaft right? or have you cut the ecentric piece in the opposite direction so that both shafts work?
