GQ DRIVE TRAIN INTO MK CHASSIS

Post by MEX »

Hello all,

My brother in law has an MK with a shagged motor and is looking at his options regarding a transplant.

Hasn't got much money to do the job so I suggested a second hand TB42 engine/manual trans/transfercase installation. Now before anybody asks why I hate my bother inlaw that much to suggest this let me explain.

1. TB42/manual trans/transfercase are all readily available cheaply because alot of people are upgrading to V8's. They are commonly for sale on websites like this one for $500 - $1000.

2. My brother in law will use this car as a playtoy only so the legendary TB42 fuel economy isn't a factor.

3. Potentialy this installation could be simple compared to other engines/transmission configurations because the GQ is the next generation of the MQ in the Nissan family.

I believe that you would have to make the following:
- FRONT ENGINE MOUNTS
- TRANSMISSION MOUNT
- DRIVE SHAFTS LENGTHENED/SHORTENED (& BALANCED)
- FAN SHROUD
- SNORKEL CONNECTION
- CUT AND SHUT A STANDARD GQ EXHAUST SYSTEM

I'm hoping that we can use the following:
- DASH ELECTRICS
- MK FIREWALL (I mean no modification to fit the new drive train)

If what i'm saying is true I believe that we can put this thing together for $2000 in parts.

If anyone here has done this or knows enough about these cars to add constructive advice to this discussion (good or bad) please do.

Cheers MEX :)

What shagged motor does he have in it?

What's already there would make a difference imho.

If it's an L28 I'd probably just buy something like this:

and get the dual fuel happening at the same time.

Or even look at an RB30.

I don't think a TB42 would be a particularly easy or worthwhile swap.

Better yet, I'd grab something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NISSAN-PATROL-RE ... dZViewItem

so you can swap in a falcon motor on the cheap. This would also be a much more worthwhile option than a TB42 imho.

You also often see rusted out MQs with V8 swaps already done for under a grand, you could grab one of these and swap the V8 in.

TB42 is an okay engine but I wouldn't be in any hurry to modify a car to fit one.
This is not legal advice.
