Rancho RS99036

Post by built4thrashing »

Does anyone know what these are to suit? Looking for the longest travel shocks to use on a hilux project.

Thanx B4T

They are a generic part number - they are not made to fit anything.

The "old" longest Rancho 99012, was actually for the rear of a 4" lifted 80's dodge ram pickup.

I believe the 99036 has the same valving as the 99012, just with another 3" more open length (15" of travel from memory)

However, even mounted vertically, there is no conventionally sprung car that could go anywhere near needing that much travel.

Hilux's have about 8" of vertical travel in the rear stock.Imagine how much shackle movement would be required to accommodate 15" of axle movement!

Even N76 OME's (10.75" travel) are plenty long enough for even flexy hilux rears.

As for the front - 12" of shaft travel would be miles.

Jim ran 99036's on his sierra for a while, and Mock ran them in Critta - even with MQ leaves and a long 3/4 elliptic, he never came close to full travel.

BTW they are sooooo long t hey are a PITA to mount. If I were you, I would flex the car up without shocks and then figure out how much shock you need.

they will be in the rear of a mates hilux based buggy. he has 10in travel shocks in it ATM and they are too short even when mounted inboard at the top. Not my project to dont know too much about it but it is on leafs all round.

I think the Mog rover used to use shocks of a ford louiville (sp) truck. Not sure of the length, but looked pretty long.

But it isn't conventionally sprung is it? You have done alot of custom work to get a lot of flex

Cranky,

Do your springs go loose at all? If so, then this is not in the range of sprung motion so IMHO, it doesn't count- dont take this the wrong way though - I don't doubt your car needs long shocks.

I run 99012's (13" travel) on the front of the G and I almost use full travel on them, but my front springs are 670mm long free and due to bushing bind, I can't get full travel on articulation.

I still say that 15" of sprung vertical wheel movement for leaves is pretty much impossible, likewise, for a coil to have 15" of usable travel it would have to be nearly a metre long, free. By this stage, a coilover is trally the only appropriate means of springing these cars.

Yes, I know that desert cars run htis much travel, or more, but they are not doing it on 99036's, nor are they what you would call conventionally sprung either- the car is built around the suspension.

In context, I stand behind what I said.

I run the 99012's on the rear and 99036's on the front of my LWB sierra, I was after the 99034's as with drop shackles and the shock mounted outboard of the spring on a NT chassis these were the closest match but they were not available so I got the 36's. The ride is OK, I normally run them on 3 to 4 unless driving on highway or with extra weight and when offroad I drop them to 0. My zook is a little overwieght though.

in its current form the hilux can put a front tyre on a 44gl drum with ease and still has travel left but is running out of shock travel. He reckons he will get al least 14in of travel with new suspension mods but wants extra shock travel as not to bottom out the shock when jumping stuff (dont ask  ) this will be only a comp / weekend rig so mods a plenty and still running leafs (all be it alot longer than standard)

here is a pic taken a long time ago and its now got alot more front flex

he is setting it up for more droop than compression and running longer custom springs and extended chasis on custom mounts. tyres will be 35s but will have clearance for 44's

like these

lots of droop and compression dont go together.

ask flynn, he could fully extend 14 inch front shocks and be limitted only by the shock, with no commpression allready. good luck finding a 20 inch shock for an affordable price. they dont go together, just buy the longest cheap shock you can and blow them up when/if you jump
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
