Wire

Post by MKPatrolGuy »

G'Day Guys,

Can anyone suggest somewhere in the Bayswater/Ringwood area to buy wire thicker than the standard 15amp (1.84mm2) that REPCO etc sell. I checked the voltage at my driving lights with them on and I'm dropping a full volt compared to the battery voltage :? So I was thinking of beefing the wiring up to something like 6mm2.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Dave

Not sure what is in Bayswater, but if there is a JB hi-fi or similar that sells car stereos try them. People tend to use big wire for their amps

Hi MK, the current rating on most wire is both confusing and has no real relation to the applied use of the wire.

The 15 amp rating on your cable is an indication of the maximum current the cable can carry before the insulation starts to melt, not not really all that helpful when trying to design a circuit.

In your case 6mm Automotive cable ( 4.5mm2 ) will do the job and run both positive and negative.

You should be able to get cable at any auto electricians.

Cheers.

Awesome, I'll be checking them out. I had a great bloke in Brisbane I used to buy from, but now he's a bit too far off!

I ended up buying 4 rolls to make up a headlight loom and few other things, thinking it was way too much overkill at the time, but I have since made a couple of headlight looms with it for mates and must admit the rolls are looking a little slim lately.

I paid about a $1 per metre when buying by the roll, for 6mm wire.
