Is this notch out factory?
Moderator: Micka
Is this notch out factory?
In my 1973 SIIA pickup I have it has this notch in the passenger side chassis rail. The welding matches the rest of the rail and almost looks factory from the finish of it. But it sort of looks out of place, so is it factory or not?

On looking at it some more - it does look very neatly done. And is the lower edge folded rather than welded?bubs wrote:keeping it and fixing the chassis rail by the sounds of itSlunnie wrote:Bubs, what are you doing with it?
I must have seen a few hundred IIA's, and I have never seen one like that - but LR did build a few weird specials. Any more info on what engine and gearbox were fitted?

Lower edge is folded, It had a Izusu 3.3L diesel, which came no where near this section of the chassis. Like I said up close which I dont have a closer pic, it looks factory, the welding is an exact match to the rest of the rail (eg the same person welded it) but it still looks out of place. I dont know what was the factory engine was.ISUZUROVER wrote:On looking at it some more - it does look very neatly done. Possible engines were 2.25 Petrol, 2.25 Diesel, or 2.6L 6cyl petrol - but none of them came standard with that notch. 6 cyl versions had a different firewall and trans tunnel, but unless you have a 4cyl one for comparison that is hard to pick.
Oh, btw - that is a SIII, not a SIIA. SIIA's finished at the end of 1971, and they didn't have the bracing strut between the chassis rail and the firewall outrigger (visible in your photo).
EDIT - looks like a 6cyl firewall from the pic.
- what are you doing with the 4BC2?

Trolling back through my pic archives, my SWB IIa had a similar cutout. That one had the Datsun ED30 + Sp, which is probably very similar if not the same as the ED33. The cutout was where part of the gearbox or started came in next to the chassis in the conversion. Its not a factory conversion, but I think it was probably a common enough conversion that was done aftermarket. That setup had unreal low range gearing and the motor would lug well.bubs wrote:Lower edge is folded, It had a Izusu 3.3L diesel, which came no where near this section of the chassis. This one has the salisbury rear too, was that normal for a 73 S11?
I think the Series3's had Salisburys, but not the IIa's. Strangely my IIa SWB wagon came with a Salisbury for some reason.
Cheers

Missed that - will be an interesting build. All 109" (LWB) SIII's had the Salisbury rear. How much do you want for it?bubs wrote:Lexus, linked, GU rear, 80/GQ front. I was gunna build a cruiser but this was a steal.Slunnie wrote:
