cheap play toy, what to buy?

Post by j-top paj »

im after a cheap 4wd that i can turn into something decent offroad and not worry about damage (looks not mechanical) BUT still be able to drive onroad without the bacon hassling me all the time.

was originally thinking a zook, doing some lift and grinder work and squeezing a set of 33s under it or something.
but im open to any suggestions..

other options were a GQ MQ MK shorty, lux possibly :? (worried about blowing diffs)

still thinking zook because of the cheap price tag attached as a mate just purchased one with 6months rego and in good nic for $1500..

any other 4wds to think about??

cheap options are early hilux, daihatsu rocky, LADA, aisia rocksta, and zooks.

zooks and hilux are easier as more parts are available after market

I reckon the $$$ for return thing makes the zook the way to go. Also, aftermarket support for sierras is unbeatable.

MQ/MK's are cool but will be hard to match the capability and running costs of the zook. If you don't really need the room, go the sierra.

 i have been thinking that, but what motor options do i have? and how much coin?
also by the time i get it sorted i would have to go or a blue slip too.

and it would still be IFS
after driving the trol offroad and the jabber down the same track just after its two totally different vehicles.
the jabber does win hands down onroad but..

i wish it was still running

Yeah, Id go the zook. So far for mine Ive got bundy rear diff locked, hilux front airlocked, spare complete diff, 4age just rebuilt, 2.5in exhaust, SOA, UHF stereo, 12 months rego, and the actual zook itself and Im just shy of $3000.

Now I just got to put it all together ;)
Add gears, tyres and cage and I reckon I'll still be under $5000 and have a beater that I can wheel the piss out of for years

Ive been patient and got most (all) of it 2nd hand and cheaply. Im on a tightarse budget (who isnt?) but managed to get the zook cheaply with a cactus engine and rebuilt it myself slowly.
Without money, parts gathering is a slow game but bargains are there if you're looking for them.

MQ shorty, and some tyres, and you're good to go imho.

Sierra would be good too I guess, a few more bolt-on bits around.
This is not legal advice.
