Exhaust question
Exhaust question
Hey
Will be looking to get a new exhaust for my TD 4.2 GU (99) soon. My mechanic suggested some good power up tips which included a 3" exhaust.
Although I am not ready yet for the other options could I still fit the 3" exhaust and do the other stuff later ie increase boost etc?

Re: Exhaust question
Go with the 3inch Dump Pipe at same time .. $200 from beaudesert in Qld for dump only.
Where are you? I had my 3inch done in Lilydale, very happy with it.
Yes you can have the pump timing and dyno work done at a later time..... but do the dump at same time as pipe.
.
Go with 3inch.. you can go with muffler or without... nice whistle without one

muffler
the turbine wheel acts like a muffler in the turbo, still without muffler will be fairly loud and only give you minimal extra grunt. Also muffler does nothing for emissions so yes its legal to run without one, noise limit is 93 db from memory but im if you do any serious road kays the noise drives you nuts. The wife will always think there is somthing wrong with the car too. I paid $800 for a 3" mild steel mandrel bent system last year. I ended up with a resonator a cat and a muffler on my RB-30 petrol turbo GQ.

Put the flex in as your exhuast will last longer and it will reduce stress on exhuast manifold turbo etc. For the cost it is a cheap way to protect the manifold if nothing else.
My exhuast (VH45 not TD42) has flexi and is then solid mounted to the floor. It is a comp truck but still it doesn't make any noise that can be heard over 4" exhuast.

big exhuast always gives the biggest amount of power over anything else you can do to a motor.
a motor is nothing more than a hair drier, suck in heaps of cold air, heat it up and chuck out the hot air.
The more cold air you can suck into an engine and then push out of an engine will give you the most power, chips and stuff can only do so much at the end of the day.
though I do wonder why only a 3inch exhuast wouldn't the stock exhuast be 2.5inch already?

I would disagree Zagan, we have dynoed a few vehicles before and after fitting an exhaust system, some have made more power, some dont. But in the essence of doing a power up, then exhaust, upping the boost and fuel delivery all go hand in hand.
In saying that we have made a td42t gu go from 85rwkw with a 3" exhaust to 130 rwkw, just by changing the turbo and altering fuel. This is much higher than just adding an exhaust.
The secret to making power on a diesel is to put in lots of cold air and get rid of it, then adjsut fuel to balance it out. Then you will have power to burn.
