Re: driving on road in 4H??
You shouldn't drive on tarmac with the hubs locked in and in H4 or L4. Wind-up will kill your transfer case (prob. before killing your diffs).peeko22 wrote:ok can you drive in 4h on he road with hubs locked i heard you cant cos the diffs compete with each other and break, but i got an ifs hilux with cv joints and crap so no front diff . is it safe for me to drive in 4h on the road or not and why ???? any help will do thanks
You do have a differential in the front.

Re: driving on road in 4H??
totally agree.... I had a minor breakage and tried to limp home only to snap the front pinion off and had to get towed the last few km's... was a biatch to fix too... hehe.. but all in the learning curve I guess...dogbreath_48 wrote:You shouldn't drive on tarmac with the hubs locked in and in H4 or L4. When in doubt..... UTE-ERIZE it!!!
I drove 400k's on my front dif only. Bent up my rear shaft so bad I had to take it off just to move the car. Decided to drive it home on the front. Only damage ( that I know of ) was that the power steering box now leaks. Just got hot that's all. So I am assuming, as long as your front dif isn't locked, it would be fine for a short time. Considering someone can drive so far on the front only.
p.s. Prob best not to but

If you removed the rear d/shaft you are still only in 2wd (front two wheels are the only ones reciving power) So long as you havn't got an auto locked front diff (lockright, detroit etc) you will not have any issues it.Turbz wrote:I drove 400k's on my front dif only. Quick tale - I know you shouldn't etc and if anyone who knew better did it they wouldn't get 200 yards down the road but........
My dear old ignorant dad who bought my old '80 (gxl full time 4wd) - got a new stereo installed and when they put the dash back in the centre diff lock button wasn't hooked up. Tojo's revert to locked in the presence of a switch failure.
Dad drove from Hervey Bay To Camp Hill (Brisbane) 350 odd kms, fully locked to show me the problem, and could I please take a look at it????
Nil damage done apart from some ugly scrubbing on the front tyres.
Why do the people who don't appreciate what they've done always get away with it???

Why would you want to drive on the road in 4WD anyway??
Never even understood why some people don't spend the 2 minutes to unlock the hubs when you've finished for the day.
