Brand new Jeeps and a massive budget easily beaten by a couple of guys in a sierra.

A couple of guys in a heavily modified Sierra that took 3 attempts at it.

Still, good on 'em, records are meant to be broken.

The rig that they drove was a 1986 Suzuki Samurai. It was heavily modified by Gonzalo, adding stronger axles, lower gear ratios, air lockers, bigger tires and Supercharger.

The whole point of the original record was the Jeeps were stock. Still a good effort though.

I'm not really weighing in to the whole jeep v suzuki thing, but the "point" was not that they were stock, the "point" was a marketing exercise for a manufactrer to raise the credentials of their product.

Obviously, achieveing higher in a modified car would be pointless as a marketing exercise for a manufacturer.

As someone pointed out, VW reached 19,XXXft in a stock touareg.

I think the logisitics are the bigger issue, and obviously Gonzalo has an advantage being a local, which is where the $$$ are in the factory attempts.

The point made, I think, on Pirate was that the two records are not really the same thing - one is the effort of a corporation motivated by marketing, the other by a guy doing it because he wants to.

Now for my 2c worth - I understand that Gonzalo picked up the sign that the jeep guys left on the hill (As he passed ;) ) I can't believe that in 2007, a factory backed team thought it was cool to litter a mountain :bad-words:

In any case, the issue with these "records" is that there are very few people trying for them. If 50 teams were shooting for the record, then there would be some real competition, as it is, the fact one guy in a car with no factory backing or logisitcal support drove higher goes to show that it isn't really that gig a deal and exposes it for the marketing driven nonsense it really is.

I just like it for the fact that two guys wanted to have a bit of an adventure and went ahead and did it. There aren't many adventures left for people to do these days so good on them.

Sure it was a marketing exercise, it was 'Look what you could do with a stock wrangler if you wanted to', if they were heavily modified AND manufacturer backed then what would be the point. One was a stock effort with manufacturer backing, one was an individual effort with a modified vehicle. Two different attempts in my book and for two different reasons. Both impressive in thier own right regardless of vehicle.

The POR thread is interesting reading on this topic - and gives a good insight into both teams......

1999 SQ625 Manual Grand Vitara. Lifted, Twin Locked, 31' Extremes, dual Batteries, Winch.
Lots of custom gear as I cant afford the proper stuff.
