Defender Centre Diff

Post by mike_beecham »

In process of replacing the release lever (and clutch while l am at it) in my Defender 200 after it punched a hole through itself in the High Country 2 weeks back leaving me strandard so to speak!

But, while l have the lot out, l noticed that the centre diff has about a 1/8th of a turn of slack in it.

Is this an acceptable amount of slack in the centre diff or what? Is there anything l can do in terms of tightening it up tolerances wise or ????? just leave it??

I would say that if the diff is not making any strange noises, and the pinion nut is tight, then leave it alone. Adjustment will require the diff to be dismantled and rebuilt, ie, the backlash will require adjustment, and this should really be done with new carrfier and pinion bearings etc.

Split the centre diff and inspect it for wear, if either the thrust washers are cactus or the cross pins, replace as needed

How "clunky" was it to drive before hand, if you were happy with it, i'd just do a visual to make sure nothing is gonna bite you on the rectum, and return it to service
