80 series to 60 series

Post by DR Frankenstine »

Does anyone know for sure if a 80 series rear diff will bolt into a 60 series housing or is it just the hemisphere thats the same. Are they the same spline count and axle size.

80 rear diff will bolt straight into a 60. they are a fair bit stronger, much heavier case, bigger side bearings, gears are more or less the same but better supported so less likely to break. all 80's are LSD or locker rear.

As quoted by Dumbdunce- my truck runs an 80s diff

Yes they bolt straight in ,slightly different ratio 60's 4-11:1 80's 4-10:1 but that won't matter the only other thing to check is that the pinion flange bolt pattern is the same 'early 60's ran a rectangular bolt hole pattern up to '84 after that it was a square pattern same as 75's 80's etc.

40, 60 and 75 are same and 80 rear...

As mentioned side bearings, and flanges are the only things that you might have difficulty with.

Side bearings only if installing a locker etc.

yes they bolt straight into a 60, i have an 80series rear diff in my 89 HJ61. The difference in diff ratio is not even noticed. am now looking for an another rear 80 diff to go in the front of mine.
