Noob ifs diff questions

Post by landy_man »

Total noob when it comes to 'lux (see username ;) )

My Lux is an 02 2.7 petrol..

- Do Surf/4 Runner front centres fit ??
- Are all ifs front centres interchangable ??
- I assume all rears are the same as any lux ??

Looking at upping the gearing a little to co-incide with a larger tyre swap..

Anyone know 100% the ratio of my Lux ??

The ratio code is on the build plate where it says trans/ axle.Post up on this thread what it has on the tag and I'll tell you what your ratio is,as long as it hasn't had a ratio change in the past.

The first part W56 relates to the Trans.By the diff' info I have AO5B translates to A =138mm diameter ring gear 05=3.7to 1 ratio B= not sure should be either 2,3,4 or 5 2 and 4 =open wheeler 3and 5 =LSD.
Is W56 A05B whats stamped on the plate after trans /axle?

thanks... on closer inspection the "B" could actually be a "3" but there appears to be a mark on the plate very close to it which makes it look like a "B"... which would be right as there is definalty a LSD in the rear..

So am I correct in assuming that any IFS Surf/4Runner/Lux front diff will fit in my Lux...

Cheers

Isn't 138mm a little small for a Hilux ring gear? That's about 5.5" isnt it?
I've got G52 A07B stamped on mine and have been trying to figure out the axle code for a while so I know what ring and pinion to get when I want to lower my ratios. Most websites have the American truck codes which dont seem to translate too well for the international Hiluxes.

According to those sites, 07 means I should have a 3.9 diff ratio in a Hilux with a non-turbo 2.8litre diesel which seems kind of a tall ratio for that gutless engine. I'd really like to know what the A07B translates to so I dont have to crack a diff to get the ratio off it. The IFS Hiluxes have different size front and rear ring gears. Could the letters in the axle code indicate the sizes at each end?

Sorry to threadjack here but has anyone bought a Yukon r&p set and installed them in a diesel hilux? If so which set did u get? The 7.5" fronts should drop in but there seems to be a V6 and 4 cylinder rear option. Both of these are 8" ring gears but the V6 ones are thicker and have a longer pinion from what I've read.

From 1998 onwards those codes used on earlier models no longer apply. My Prado uses the same "new" coding of A02A which i would like to know what it means aswell, as i havn't found a reliable source yet.

From what i've read (i havn't looked) But the front, although is a 7.5" as per earlier model, it's not the same C&P as it's a high pinion diff and the gears are reverse cut. Although take the same carrier, so Lockers used are identical.

Just had a look at the front diff in my 03 Lux and it looks like it's a standard low pinion diff with the ring gear located in a similar position to the rear diff so should be standard cut gears. Can't comment on the new Surfs/4runners as I have no experience with them.

Anyone know of any sites that can translate the new axle codes?

Not sure on a reliable net source but here is what I have forund anyway if its any help.

Your 02 2.7 will be a 7.5mm, 4.3 ratio, open diff. All the 2.7s are the same and that is what mine had.

The surfs seem to run 4.56 and the older 22r SR5s run 4.88s.
The Prado and gen 3 surfs are the same and different to the others above.

To answer your question yes any of the ifs front diffs, runner, surf, lux will fit. The rear as already said is a little different the V6 rears are stronger and slightly different.

Just work out what ratio you want to go to and do a ring around they are usually easy enough to come by. If you are running 32s go a 4.56 if 33s or larger with the 2.7 Id go 4.88s.

If you're not sure what ratio diffs you have in and you want to get a rough estimate of what the ratio is without opening the diff I did this simple method yesterday taken from http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_TechInfo ... ferentials
If the differential is still installed inside an axle, then assuming you have open differentials, lift one wheel on the axle in question off the ground. Put the tranny in neutral, transfer case in 2H, e-brake off (if is the rear axle you are testing) and put a chalk mark on the driveshaft and on the tire. Now turn the tire in the air through 2 full revolutions, while counting the revolutions that the driveshaft makes. The number of which will be equal to your gear ratio. You can get a more accurate count by doing 10 or 20 wheel revolutions and dividing the driveshaft turns accordingly. Why *2* wheel revolutions? Because, the ring gear in an open differential turns at the average speed of the two axle shafts connected to it. SInce one is on the ground (and thus not turning) the other axle shaft (i.e. the one you are turning) must turn twice as fast as the ring gear, so 2 revolutions on one axle + 0 revolutions on the other shaft averages out to 1 revolution on the ring gear.

If you have a limited slip or automatic locker, then you'll need both wheels in the air and you'll use just one wheel revolution to get the rear ratio.
I put 8 chalk marks on the diff pinion flange to make it a bit more accurate. I got approximately 4.55:1 doing this method and when I checked online to see what ratios are out there there's a 4.56 so thats what i must have in my 2.8 diesel

Mate you are 100% correct The 97-01 model 2.7 petrol hiluxes are a 4.3 ratio (all the 2.7's could be...)

Those axle codes are old and caused me no end of grief, I nearly bought a 3.7 gear set to replace mine, luckily i have a mate who wroks at toyota and got the info for me

I took the diff off and counted just to be sure too
