recently bought a 100 series 4.5 litre 1fzfe. has 160000 on clock.upon startup it blows a puff of smoke. if left idling for a period of time it blows a puff of smoke. seems to smell more like fuel than oil. took it to toyota to get a diagnostic check done and they say theres nothing wrong. they made a couple of minor adjustments but its still blowing smoke. toyota say its a common problem and just to try some thicker oil. dont want to damage engine anyfurther though.i thought it might be valve guide seals but they say no.only charged me 30 bucks to have a diagnostic check done and no computer readout on paper. anyone reckon there telling me bullshit or what and has anyone else had a similar problem with these engines. i had an80 series withthe same engine it had 285000 on the clock and didnt smoke this much.thanks
Mate, you need new valve seals to fix the problem, mine has similar kms and problem, bought a new motor for it 4 years ago, and it is still in the shed, because the old motor just keeps on puffing smoke and going like a train.
Mine uses about 2 litres in 5000kms, tappet cover is black inside, (rings are leaking) but it keeps on going.
Try using a 20w50 oil instead of 15w40 next oil change, otherwise, a head service is $1500 forpiece of mind.

thanks mate thought that was the case i reckon toyota must have been a bit busy when they checked it (or suposedly checked it). well i wont be tacking it to them to fix. where did you get the quote from was this for you to change and fit the head yourself or someone else. dont really want to try doing it myself bit worried i might stuff it up. thanks wayne
Thought you said it smelled like fuel wouldn't it make sense to get your injectors cleaned first possibly gummed up if engine sat for a while. Stem seals are designed to let oil into valve guides to lubricate valve stems you will still get some oil smoke if the valve guides are badly worn even with new stem seals. Most performance engines I have built I leave the exhuast stem seals off the small amout of oil going down the guides is not even noticeable.

My bro has a 2000 model 100 series with a petrol 6 engine, it done 80K and that also blows a bit of smoke on start-up.
Seems to be black smoke rather than blue (ie fuel rather than oil) but
who knows.
Maybe Toyota have changes the piston or ring sizes to make the engine more economical and run smoother but went too far like the GM V8s in the commodores?

Thats probably just the fuel enrichment part of the efi pouring it in...the 100 series runs a MAP sensor system.

where the two engine pipes go into 1 behind the drivers front wheel, the two pipes are squashed almost half their diameter for 50mm...cut this out and put a 2 into 1 proper joint in...the front muffler is straight through, leave it, but take out6 the second round one and fit a flat one thesame length.....as free as possible bit no straight throughs....too loud....get the exhaust mob to continue after the muffler to the rear resonator that is also straight through, leave that aswell.Spartacus wrote:really? i thought the exhaust was resonably big measured 2-2.5"dow50r wrote:all it takes is one valve seal to have gone hard....not hard to do with so much power std.and a restrictive exhaust keeping the heat in...

Dow50r's mods to the exhaust is correct.
It is crushed to buggery as factory fittment and is by far the biggest restrictor in the system and would contribute measurably to increased exhaust temps in that area dur to the chooking effect caused.
Ive since fitted extrators and a 2.5in system with 1 large straight through muffler and 1 resonator and it sounds sporty rather than loud but above all that the engine just loves the freer flowing system and the truck is much more responsive to slight throttle adjustment not to mention the bigger adjustments.

got the valves replaced and engine feels more smoother than before.
gave the exhaust lad a call and asked what he could do.
- extractors and 2.5 exhaust with massive muffler and resonator $900
told me that due to cam it will require a large muffler to keep it quiet
and non drone-ing
im thinking of just gettin extractors hooked up to the original system
