Vitara R & P Into Sierra Hemisphere

Post by No Idea »

Can anyone advise on what shim should be used to space the ring gear out when using the 5.12 r&p from the Vitara?

I doubt if this is what you wanted to hear - but i believe that there is no shim required for fitment if the car has ARB Airlocker's in it...

Perhaps it's a good excuse to put them in at the same time

Easiest option should be two vitara front diffs - one in each end of the sierra.....

I've been trying to get help on going back the other way - using sierra diffs in the Vit but been told putting the Sierra bits in the Vitara rear diff centre is in the "impossible or near it" category.

Damn shame as dual t/case with 1 litre transfer and 3.73's gives me the gearing I want..

Well I`ve been running 5.12 front Vitara ring and pinions with ARB air lockers with no problems at all.

Greg your right in saying that you don`t need to shim up the gears if using the front Vitara ring and pinion in a sierra ARB locker carrier.

But if using the vitara R&P`s in a stock sierra carrier you should use the appropriate shims. I`ve heard some people say that you don`t need any shims, but if you want them to mesh properly you should use the shims.
They will be alot stonger, wear alot less, and run quieter if they have the correct meshing angle. There is not enough backlash adjustment to correctly setup the vitara R&P`s in the sierra carrier. If you are going to use this car onroad and plan on doing 100km/h then you definately want them setup right.

Check out this product. It will solve your dilema.

I just happen to have a pair of these which I`m not using. Still brand new in the box if your interested. I never got around to using them...got lockers instead

Hope this helps

Been to the link, and I have 2 questions (I know a little bit about diffs);

1: Where do the two parts go that are in the picture?
&
2: How much do you want for them?

Ok......this will be fun to explain hehe.

The retainer ring (which is the larger of the two rings) slides in between the ring gear and the carrier. Because the inside diametre of the Vit R&P is larger then the sierra`s, the two shafts that hold the sun gears pivot on will move around a bit. This retainer will securely lock the pivot shafts in place. The original Sierra R&P would normally have done this. If you have CIG welded diffs (very cheap and permantly on locker) then you won`t need this retainer as the sun gears will be welded.

The smaller ring is a shim. You will notice that on each side of the carrier there is a bearing which is secured in place by a special locking nut. This nut is designed to adjust the carriers backlash. The shim that is in the kit goes in between the bearing and the locking nut on the opposite side of the ring gear. This will move the carrier over slighty to mesh correctly with the new pinion. Fine adjust is still done with the locking nuts.

Well I hope that expains everything for you. The kits do come with detailed instructions.
If you want them there yours for $70.

It's the rear vit that's the issue - you use 2 front vit diffs in the sierra no issues, but the reverse ain't true - you can't use 2 sierra diffs in the Vit.

Anyway... got other cards up my sleeve.

As love_mud will know......

98:1 or 112:1 crawl ratio in the vit - series 2 "rockcrusher"

Muuuuhuuuuhahahahah!
