Well mate at that milage i'd be rebuilding the old girl. I have no idea of the cost to rebuild but if you were to do it urself u'd save a lot. Then theres the head to consider,, U might pull it off only to find it is cracked or somthing.. Then Y did the big ends get noisey????? Thats the big question.. How muchwhite metal was gone from the shells, was it down to the metal??
Cheers sterlo

The most difficult parts of rebuilding a TD42 are removing the cylinder liners and installing new cam bearings. I had a tool made up to remove the liners when i did the rebuild--new liners tapped in fairly easily. Nissan have a special tool to install the cam bearings which ensures that the oil holes are lined up with the feed ports in the block properly.I had the shop replace the cam bearings for me, but i did all the rest. Other than that, its pretty straight forward although $$$ even if you do it yourself. To set the Injection pump timing properly, you'll need to get a timing gauge--the engine is very heavy--make sure your crane/lifting tackle is up to it. Have a few pics of the rebuild if you need them. I rebuilt mine at 550,000.
