Alternator specs

Post by robsjimny »

Hey all. A friend of mine is put a second alternator in. He love the size of the jimny one. i'm thinking it may be hard to source one and the price. Is a sierra one the same size. As in output current and mase etc. Jimny is 70 amps max. Any comments welcome.

Cheers Rob

Sierra alternator is probably very similar in size to Jimny but has only a 45 amp output. These alternators were used in carby cars where current draw is much lower.

Carby vitara alternators are the same as sierra, but have a multi V belt. Can't comment on output though.

2nd alternator into what? What about getting the current alternator rewound by an auto electrician to a higher output. What is he going to do in regards to brackets and belts to drive the 2nd alternator.
I had looked into going the dual alternator route many years ago but in the end was easier to just get the alternator modified

How many extra amps can you get from a stock sierra alternator by getting it rewound? and how cost effective is it?

mine was a Toyota one so it began as a 70 and got rewound to about 120 from memory and cost about $200 to do. This was a few years ago though, so my memory isn't too clear on the details.

Just ring an auto electrician and find out from the,. Not all will do it either as some don't recommend it due to heat etc but i never had any dramas due to heat

if you have the space the EL ford alternator its an option...for a sierra anyway. 100amps+ on a v-belt and haven't had any issues. main thing to remember is that the belt will seat itself deeper into the v after an inital run in so re tensioning is a must to save it from breaking. Built for thrashing did a write up but was breaking belts...I've taken mine out, given it a good run....drowned it...played in Mud with stereo, 2xBlitz240s, 2x narva 170s, 550cca battery and its going great guns so far...
Only a few mods to alternator bracket and slide bracket and its all good....
