Snorkel

A friend of mine kindly gave me a safari snorkel for my birthday present.
What a LEDGEND !
I have a LN106 diesel 2.8, and i am very happy with it.
I copied the template, with some light card that was the same as the original. In this I also marked the center of the large hole for the outer guard, and after marking on the guard the center of this, I then measured, and cut the hole out of the copied template.
I then used a drill to drill inside the marked large hole on the guard, and then used tin snips to nip the small bits between then, and then used a file to enlarge to the marked size.
Once this was done, I then placed the copied template, which had the large hole cut out of it onto the guard, and then placed the snorkel in position, I then taped the template to the snorkel, and removed the snorkel, and template together as one unit.
I then was able to mark accurately where the 4 locating holes were on the template by pushing my pen thru into the corresponding holes.
With this now maked in the template, I then refitted the template, (which I had accurately marked on the guard so as to refit it exactly where it was, and then could drill with confidence that the holes were in the correct spot.
I drilled the holes out to 14mm, and checked that they were in the correct spot, and they were, and then took them out to the required size as per the destructions.
Once again, I fitted the snorkel in place, and then marked and drilled the A pillar mount, and then made the inner hole same long way as the outer hole, and then fitted the required doublers.
I painted all exposed surfaces with some white Kill rust paint I had laying around, and fitted up the snorkel.
I used the lower studs to hold the snorkel in place, and then put in the two upper bolts, which cleared the guard.
With that all fitted, the top screws in the A pillar were fitted with a dob of sillastic, and then I fitted the connecting hose, and airfilter box etc.
Results.
At 2200 to 2500 I had a terrible vibration, which I felt I had to look at.
Next day I made sure that there was no pressure between the airfilter box, and the snorkel, as before there was a bit of prelaod between then if you know what I mean, With this addressed, it certainly reduced the vibration, and after putting some padding around the arial where it may have touched the guard, and now its very quiet.
I do notice induction noise, as it was quiet before, but its not as bad as the early 3Ltr 5L motor lux's with a noisy airbox.
Just thought I would let you know my results with the fitting, and tweaking.
I have noticed at light to med throttle better response, and speed, and when under load its not that noticable, however when going up hills that would only maintain speed, or need a lower gear, that I can now accelerate, albeit slowly up them, or maintain the gear.
Cheers

Does anyone have a assembly drawing of the safari snorkels? Doesn't have to be model specific, just the general assembly (blown-a-part isometric drawing for instance)
I am getting some loud resonating noise at about 3000rpm and trying to work out what has come loose and vibrating.
Thanks

I assume you have a Hilux too?danos wrote:On this topic...

Naturally aspirated 3L (2.8) Hiluxes have a terrible inlet resonance, somewhere from 2200-3000rpm. We ran Safari snorkels on three hiluxes in the early nineties, two N/A ,one turbo.
Safari used to supply a foam sock to go down inside the snorkel to assist, but it was pretty detrimental to performance on the N/A cars and the turbo car wanted to suck it through the snorkel
We spent a lot of time on this, changing the way it mounted etc, but generally, I used to run it disconnected and only hooked it up when I locked my hubs.
IMHO it is due, at least partly, to changes in the internal diameter of the snorkel acting as a resonant chamber.
Rob Kay (ex Northern 4WD back in the day) also tried baffles in the inlet trunking between the airbox and the manifold, but these looked to me like they would hurt power too.
If you hold the car at revs while it is resonating and run your ear up and down the snorkel, you can hear different harmonics as the diameter changes.
I am suspiscious that if the inside of the snorkel had a 3" tube up the middle and the gaps foam filled, it would be pretty quiet.
The best way of fixing this is to fit a turbo - stops the resonance totally.

I was able to remove the resonance by ensuring the 4 mounting holes were spaced so that when the studs, and bolts were placed thru them, they didnt touch the guard.
Same with the 2 holes in the guard and inner guard.
I also made sure there was no preload on the pipe/ flexible hose between the snorkel and the air filter inlet.
And I made sure the antenna wasnt vibrating, and put some padding near its lower section where it can touch the inner guard.
Check those, and then let us know how you got on.
I also put a small self tapper in the snorkel head so its fastened to the snorkel body, and then placed the hose clamp over that so you cant see it. It did help in making the snorkel head more firm, and less likely to vibrate more than the body.
I hope that helps.

Well... It sbeen a while since this thread. Enough time for me to buy an engel and start installing a second battery.
I took the resonator out to free up some space for the battery and now it makes A HEAP of noise at 2500-3000rpm like you said.
Turbo is the last option so I'm going to have to try and fix it. I think my chances are pretty slim since Toyota had to fit a big black box (resonator)to stop it!
My questions are:
1. A mate has same car (5L engine) but earlier month. It didnt come with the resonator and doesnt make the noise. Why?
2. When the snorkel is installed, do they remove the plastic guard inside the wheel arch? I had a go at trying to take it out but the plastic grommets are too hard to take out without breaking them.
My hope is to take the plastic guard out then tighten up a few things and maybe add some foam to at least reduce the vibration.
Thanks

Here the 5L ( in 2 door Prado SWB ) come with a air filter box that include some sort of turbonator
at the intake of the air filter box .. it could be the reason for no sound .

Im thinking that any inlet resonance has to come from cam timing... your mate's car may have a diffrent cam grind???
some cruisers have a expansion chamber type thing in the inlet tract.. something similar may fix your prob... or is this what you removed?
seemingly small changes can have a big impsct on resonance... experement..
