is it legal

is it legal to drive a sierra with the doors off in qld??
Why would you want to drive a sierra with the doors ON?Trav83yo wrote:even if it was seriously do you really wanna do that
are you delivering newspapers?
Seriously, don't knock it until you have tried it. It is heaps of fun and makes the car heaps easier to place off road.
You WILL gather some "attention" from the wallopers, but all advice is that it is legal.
I don't actually like driving my sierra offroad with the doors on. It feels tight and I don't feel like I have enough visibility.
I will be building some 1/2 doors for mine (acutally, I own a pair, but they seem to spend more time on another car in the club... ) but the full no doors thing is a total blast off road.
Takes some getting used to though.

Good question.shw337 wrote:i was also wondering about this, i dont know the laws on this, and if seen by the cops wat do we say?
I have seen the piece of paper from canberra explaining it is legal, but seriously, if the cop wants to canary you, he will, and there is nothing at all you can do about it standing by the side of the road. You won't ever ever ever convince a cop not to book you - they will haev already made their mind up based on a heap of stuff, some of which you had control over (speed, driving style, whatever) and some you just don't.
I was pulled by my local cop (small town) and they had a chat to me about why I didn;t have doors on. (10.00pm on a saturday night... had to drive past them while they were aiming a radar down the road) I explained it was legal, including the DOTARS thing, and the outcome was- "mate, if a TOG unit pulled you, you would get a canary without question...they will canary you and let you sort it out" but they didn't book me, checked my license, blew into the bag.... on my way.
as I said, it IS legal.... but it's very hard to prove, There is nothing that says "Suzuki sierras manufactured from XXXXX to XXXXX are legal with the doors removed" so there is some interpretation, and the roadside interpretation will go against you, odds are.
A way around this is to pull the doors when you get to the bush and lock them to a tree, out of sight with a bike lock, then enjoy your day.
PS you have to have mirrors in any case, so they will have to be moved.
Obviously, if you push too hard, they will look harder and get you for all the otehr stuff that's not legal either, so it might be best to shut up and cop it too.

i see about the greater visibility ie you can just look down etc and you can see more on passenger side and for that it is good off road
however on road i would have doors esp tbone collision although i doubt that door stopping much its gotta take some impact rather than having someone squish you in just a minor prang
check your local state authorities

This has been covered many times in the General thread (with much bitching and hearsay). As stated above it is legal as long as your mirrors are attached. However any copper can book you for it if they are unsure or convinced it is illegal. You then need to go have it inspected etc with the doors back on. I have done it and I have driven straight past police often. That's not to say you won't get pulled up though.

Trust me the sense of security is all psychological - sierra doors would have trouble protecting you from a determined pigeon.Trav83yo wrote:i see about the greater visibility ie you can just look down etc and you can see more on passenger side and for that it is good off road

Coiler doors, however, are very solid and do have an intrusion bar.

I looked into this awhile back I rang the rta tech line and they said if you dont have side intrusion bars you can take them off. BUT like others have said Id be worried about the boys in blue. Ive cut the tops off my hinges so when Im bush I just open the door and lift them off them slip them back on for the road.

having been pulled over a few times before for various things and checks I have never had the doors missing been the reason or on any of the defect notices etc. As long as you have all the mirrors on the vehicle that it came with and are wearing your seat belt it is fine. If you have half doors you must have the catches that operate as per factory, in other words they need to be the burst proof ones
