That means your gearboxes are farked..... not surprising really the way you drive thembj on roids wrote:anybody notice these 1hz's like to roll away on hills?
I have had 5 landcruisers all 1998 and onwards and the 1HZ after about 80k will not hold on a hill in first gear.....
CRAZAY shenanigans, have they got really low compression?

more like the engine compression is compromised, either by leaky valves or worn rings.Mad Cruiser wrote:That means your gearboxes are farked..... not surprising really the way you drive thembj on roids wrote:anybody notice these 1hz's like to roll away on hills?

cracks in the head between the valves would explain the leaking comp. Then again, so would bigger tyres effect the amount of hold the motor would have....and the extra weight of the accessories...yada yada yada...Shadow wrote:more like the engine compression is compromised, either by leaky valves or worn rings.Mad Cruiser wrote:That means your gearboxes are farked..... not surprising really the way you drive thembj on roids wrote:anybody notice these 1hz's like to roll away on hills?

im not a huge fan of them, the handbrakes fill up with sand and salt water and stop working and then the bastard thing tries to escape on me....
i have to make sure i park it facing into a tree or similar.
maybe i do treat them a little rough! but its no excuse for new cars trying to run away!

Cruized - 1HD-FT
Hi CRUIZED how are you? May i ask why you are looking for a 1HD- FT and not .... say a 1HD-T
Why i ask is. I have a 1HD-FT and the collets come off the exhaust valves. Yes all but one valve had atleast one moved out of place or or dropped out. Not ONE of the inlet had moved!! Both come off one valve and the result was not pretty. Have heard of three other cases and one did it twice. Some thing of interest though, they all seem to be AUTO's. Supprise supprise Toyota has neverrrr heard of that before!! Havent heard of the 1HD-FTE doing it though and acording to toyota's part numbers they are the same parts.
The other good reason it the pric to have the injectors done is much more $$$ around the $1200 to $1300 mark. These are a dual pressure injector and there for are a lot more labour to set up. The injectors live up in the top of the motor and to remove them you have to take off the crossover tubes, rocker cover, cam assbly and then the inject. One more good thing is setting the valves, very fiddly. They run a bridge set up. Two places to set.
In saying all that, if set right and keep an eye on the collets they seem a nice motor with plenty of go.
I hope my exp. is of some value to you, and wish you all the best in which ever way you go. Cheers

hdft
had same problem with my 1hdft with the coletts, lucky to pick up on it before they droped
when i took the head in to get fixed was told it was a common problem when the valve clearances were not done every 40 000 klms,
cannot not blame toyota for no maintance

Re: hdft
this is exactly right. the clearances are critical and tend to open up over time, which hammers the ends of the valve stems and deforms the collet groove. it's not too much of a mission to do the valve clearances, takes about 1.5 hours, doesn't need any special tools, just patience and care.tobie wrote:had same problem with my 1hdft with the coletts, lucky to pick up on it before they droped

Just found an add in last sundays paper...
New Town Toyota in Western Australia have a Parts & Service advert advertising 1HDFTE's for $9250.
"New Parts, prices inclusive of fitting in New Town Toyota workshop, and GST. Includes 12month unlimited kilometre warranty."
Now, there is a slight quinky dink but. They also have 1HZ's, 1HDT, 1HDFT all advertised at the same price of $9250.

just on a side note, when i was rebuilding my 1hdt motor i was searching around some mining sources and found a few with crate motors
in malaysia and up north qld some mines still have a couple of 1hdt long motors brand new on crates never started for $7500, when they were mining in the early 90's with 80series they use to buy a whole bunch of replacement motors from toyota cheap
although, being long motor you still need injector pump, turbo, manifolds etc etc
as for the $9000 for a 1hdt or 1hz, thats a complete ripoff unless they are brand new crate motors
engine wrecking company in archerfeild brissy sell a complete (yes, pump, turbo, starter motor) for $6000

Hi tobie, how are ya?
Is yours and auto as well?
How did you know something was wrong?
With my 80s i only got to do 8000k in it before it happened. No noises or rattles ie valve noise etc. As for toyota, if it is so common i think they would have heard of it!!! I'am not looking to "blame" anyone, but to find out how to stop it from ever happening again. This is why we checked all the part numbers, to see if there was a revision.
As for maintenance, have no history of the car so dont know when they were last set or even checked. The sad part of buying second hand.
Dumbdunce, how are ya?
In regards to the valves and collets we can see nothing that indicates wear or hammer marks. Thats why we could not understand it. Generally i would say if there was no valve niose you would not touch then, but not in this case.
Thankyou very much for your help and advice guys, i have only put 20,k on it since rebuild. Will be watching the ks now i tell ya!!
Cheers
