gearbox rebuild a long way from home

I'm up in Caloundra at the moment, mid-way through a bit of a road trip. (I'm from Melbourne) Thought I had covered all bases getting the vehicle serviced and inspected before I left but now I have a grinding noise coming from the ttransfer. It disappears when I take my foot right off the accelerator but even with the slightest bit of throttle it coems back. The noise is consistent with road speed so I figure its a bearing on the output somewhere. I checked fluids and they're all full but the transfer oil has glitter through it... not good.

I figure I should have it looked at before I head on to Fraser Island cos I don't want to end up stuck and if they're going to do 1 bearing its probably worth getting the whole transfer overhauled while they are at it.

The question is, can anyone suggest somewhere to have it done thats not too far from here? I'm in Caloundra for a week so I can dump the car for a day or 2 and bus back. If I need to go a little further afield to get it done properly. Vehicle is MWB Landcruiser

probably a bit far but i just had my hilux gearbox done by Gabba gearboxes at Wooloongabba in Brisbane (3391 8822). Good bunch to deal with, do a top job (were reccomomded to me by a mate from one of Brisbanes top auto engineering shops) and fast turnaround. you could probably get it done cheaper but I'd rather pay a little more for a quality job.

yep i would get it fixed before fraser 1,000 bucks for a tow over there.....
and the mechanic there is the strangest bloke on the planet.

There a good gearbox shop in Kunda Park, Maroochydore.
Place is called Sunstate Gearboxes, they seem to have a good rep.

Also Top Cog in Caloundra, does good work. Haven't used him tho.
Best to get a few prices first.
Mate of mine works next to him at the radiator shop.

I can almost guarantee it will be the idler gear between your input and output shaft in the transfer making the noise. The hard facing comes off the shaft that it runs on and the chews out the needle roller bearings and the inside of the gear where they run.

My 75 series ute did the same thing..... Was only noisy on acceleration, and the faster you went the louder it got. You really should change all the bearings in the transfer because the metal filings will be all through the bearings. Not too hard to do at home if you have the gear, but makes it a bit hard being on holidays.
