Sorry : Big Rover Bang!

Post by Ironbarks »

Sorry am New member, posted in WRONG SECTION !!!!

They say if you learn something every day you will have a fulfilling life.

At Appin on a climb just past Options on Sat, my 1991 RR left drive shaft went bang......... well what did I learn?

First lesson: Too much power, a rear ARB difflock and STANDARD Pommie axles do not make for a long term partnership. After a quick onsite check, the shaft had sheared at the spline.

My second lesson was when changing axles make sure the tyre/wheel is elevated to prevent all the oli draining out when the axle is extracted.

My third lesson was that maxi drives are the go and its heaps easier to organise them when you can drive the bloody car.

With the broken axle back in and the difflock on, and some help up the rest of the hill I made it home safely. A big thanks to all the guys in the Wollondilly 4WD club. There is nothing like the experience of club members in the bush.

Three lessons in one day - a fulfilling experience !!

I was told when I bought the RR that the mechanic within would soon see the light of day...... well, bring it on!

I know where you're coming from.

I went through 3 sets on axles in 6 months with a 10 spline ARB air locker and had a gutful of having to fix it trackside. Sold it and bought a second hand maxi-drive complete, never had a probblem since that day :D
