changing engine from 4.8 to a 4.2td can it be done

Post by troy gill »

looking at buying a 4.8 petrol auto and pulling out the petrol engine and puting in a 4.2td i want to do this mod as to get a 4.2 td auto and the fact that i can save close to 10000 buying a petrol over the 4.2

so is this a simple engine swap or do u need custom adaptors between engine and gear box
are the engine mounts in the same place
what other issues might i have with this any imput would be great thanks

to buy a 4.2td is worth about 10grand more than the exact same as a 4.8 petrol and they are hard to find in auto

I'll take the 4.8 donk off your hands, wouldn't want you to be burdened with it. :D

apparently the 4.8 auto is near on impossible not totally, but near enough) to get working with many other engines.. Brunswick Diesel gave up... some place in Moorabbin also had a "project" for 12 mths and gave up.. Rodney at Wholesale autos had a go at it, and ... call him and ask lol

Question without notice Mr Speaker...would the 4800 mate up to a GQ manual box without much trouble...? and are the efi ECU electonics able to be mated up to the primitive GQ host body?

another question how does the 4.8 swim as wear i live at the moment in remote NT there is deep water crossings when it rains some over the bonet and was just worried that the 4.8 wouldnt be up for that

and i do love my 4.2 td in my comp truck it keeps running even when it starts to float never had a river stop me in that truck

Mate I have had both a 4.5 and a 4.8 and they are very very good with water. I think if ya put coil packs on em they would be even better.

I used to go to car lovers all the time with the 4.5 and just wash the whole engine bay down with high pressure not caring what i went over and you could just get in and start it.

They are a good 4wd motor if not a bit thirsty (this is a whole other thread)

They certainly seem a lot more resistant to water than any car type motor ie ls1's etc. They sniff water and fuck up
