well people... the unthinkable has happened last nite.. my rig broke down on me.... :shock: i suspect its the fuel pump or the coil that has gone bad... not sure though.. :bad-words: heres what happened... was drivin at 75 in 4th gear passing a truck... then shifted up into 5th gear an let off the gas to slow it down a bit... when i reached around 67, 68... the engine jus kind of sputtered.. then died... an happened so fast. pulled over an tried to turn it over... it turned over but nothing fired.... it sounds ok when i crank it.. an i didnt feel, hear, or see anything that indicated an engine blow. so.. today i towed it to my place an will tow it to a friends tomorrow so hopefully we will find some answers to what the problem is on my lil 1990 us rocky sx with 113,000 miles on it. also... i noticed that my clutch is getting a little weak.. should i jus buy a standard clutch kit or should i get a kit that is geared a bit more for off road use? an whre could i get it?

Has the engine still got compression when you crank it- or does it just turn over very fast at a constant speed?

ok.. the starter engages an attempts to crank over... but there is NO compression, the cam an the lifters are not moving... so i KNOW the timing belt snapped.. can u believe it... $56 us jus for ONE freakin belt :bad-words: an another $100 for labor... eh. thank god thats the issue. i placed an order on the belt an it will be here tuesday.. hoping it will be up an runnin wensday nite.. will let u guys know.

So your timing belt snapped while you were driving- that's what I thought it sounded like happened?

If that's the case I think you're going to need more than just a new timing belt. I'm sure the HD engine is an interference design- which means valves will have met pistons! :?

That's what killed my last two Daihatsu engines (Charades).

I hope for your sake that's not the case.

Hi all, my first post but have been following all the topics for quite a while. Will post on Owners sticky as soon as I get a good photo. Just Briefly though. 95'Limited Edition Feroza Narrow Track. 2" Suspension Lift Extractors. Purchased it new, 8 years ago yesterday.

The Feroza Engine IS an interference type. I know from personal experience. Last year I had the key on the crankshaft timing pulley shear so the crank just spun inside the pulley. Bent valves, cracked valve bushes but only a small mark on the pistons. Cost me $1300 and that was doing all the work myself.

:shock: oh god dont tell me that.... :crazyeyes: lets hope that is NOT what happened to my engine... but it seems i will find out on wesnday nite.. will let u guys know what happens... thank god i have a parts truck sitting by.. may jus need to pull the engine core out of that one...

If the Timing Belt has gone....then it usually stuffs your Valves !!

Easiest and Cheapest way to solve the problem is to get a replacement engine from an importer and install it !!

Then you can use yours for bits !!

Replacement engines are usually under $1000
The all you need is time!!

well i took the head off this afternoon an looked around for any sign of damage... didnt seem to find any an everything looks ok so far, didnt hear nothing when i cranked it either... that belt comes in tomorrow so i will put it on there an do a compression test before i attempt to fire it up. will let you guys know.... does anyone know if the engine has the clearence? i would naturally assume that it doesnt since quite a few peeps has lost their engines due to timing belts snapping on em. so if thats the case an IF i have no damage.. i am one hell of a lucky guy! but if there is damage... i'm going to check out the exent of it an hopefully no pistons will be damged an i can jus swamp heads off of my parts truck... we'll see what happens...

At the very least you'll probably have bent valves. As you were driving when it snapped some valves must have hit a piston- the engine bottom end would have continued rotating while the valve train had stopped. I think it would be impossible for all of your valves to be up high enough to clear all the pistons.

If the pistons all look OK then I guess you can just do a head swap with your spare engine. Good luck! :)

Bummer!!!!

Your piston should still be alright with any luck. The guy who bought my last Charade off me said only the valves were bent. The belt on it snapped at about 5000RPM too!

Better start hunting around for a head gasket.

oh god i totally forgot about the head gasket....... well that prolly wont come cheap i bet... any ideas? lol

Don't know- there was a number posted on WARFS a few days back for a USA phone number for Daihatsu- try that.

You may need new head bolts too. A lot of them are designed to only be used once (they stretch when torqued and shouldn't be reused again).

I hope your spare one is ok. If it isn't and u have to fix the original one,
it might pay to check the valve guide bushes aswell. All the exhaust ones were cracked when i did mine. Here is a list of the parts i got from the local engine repair place.

ACL Valve Regrind Set-DR880 $225.50
(Head gasket, Valve oil seals, & i think exhaust and intake gaskets)
Exhaust Valve Guide Set $57.20
Inlet Valve Guide Set $57.20
Exhaust Valve Set $114.40
Inlet Valve Set $105.60

It adds up quite quickly.
