Toyota 2.4D/2.8D/Turbo questions
Hi all. I'm only new to the Toyota forum, and i've already spent about 8 hours searching, trying to find some answers - but haven't had much success. I'm not really up with all the Toyota engine models, or the toyota turbo models, so here goes....
- Will a 2.8D bolt straight into the place of a 2.4D?
(eg. replace a dead 2.4D in a solid axle 4Runner, with a 2.8D out
of a mid 90's Hilux)
- I've heard of the CT20 turbo being used HEAPS on some 2.4D & 2.8D toyota motors, and i understand that they're off a Surf model. Do these just bolt straight up to the existing exhaust manifold on the 2.4/2.8's??
Thanks in advance,
Coxy

basiclly yes..... But things to watch out for is the placement of the accessories I.E. alt, ps pump and ac pump.... also the placement of the oil filter and the sump.
I put a 2lte (2.4lt turbo) motor into my 84 hilux, didn't have too many isues.... just had to change the sump.....
re: the turbo you will need to get the exhaust manifold from a turbo motor, you can keep the inlet but will have to make the intake pipe from the turbo to the intake manifold.
hope this helps

Cheers mate. Very helpful!! So basically a 2.8D will fit straight in the place of a 2.4D, with the exceptions of accessories, oilf filter and sump.
And if i wanted to put a basic turbo setup onto a 2.4D, i'm best to get a 2.4TD exhaust manifold, turbo, and any other oil line etc. that i might need.
Thanks for your help Hylux - Coxy

Thanks Nev. I'm trying to decide to either a)replace a dead 2.4D with another 2.4D; b) replace the dead 2.4D with another, then put a turbo on it; c) replace the 2.4D with a 2.8D; d) replace dead 2.4D with a 2.8D and put a turbo on it. Cost is a bit of an issue, as this is a BUDGET (very budget) vehicle. The cheaper the better.
I've got a spare 2.4D sitting in my shed, and i've got access to a dirt cheap 2.8D (only done 25,000km since FULL rebuild) - so i'm open to all options. I'm definately staying with the diesel, and i know that the Hilux/4Runner will never be as strong/fast as my old Patrols, but it is basically going to be a bush/weekend truck, with the occasional towing of the motorbike trailer.
So let the opinions keep on coming,
Coxy

2.8, and turbo it down the track. The 2.8 (3L) has similar torque and Kw output to the 2-LT. So if you want more the 2.8 is obviously going to be a better base to begin with .. Add that to a recent full rebuild ..
The 2-LT also has a boost compensator on the fuel pump so you dont wid up with lots of black smoke at low boost levels.

2L = standard not turbo 2.4 diesalcoxy321 wrote:So when i hear/read the toyota guys talking about the 2-LT, thats the factory 2.4 turbo diesel??
The 2-LT also has oil squirters under the pistons and a few other bits to help it stand up to being turbo'd
2-LT = 2.4 turbo factory gen I has an alloy rocker cover, Gen II* has a stamped steel rocker cover. 2-LT's have a mechanical injector pump with a boost compensator to add extra fuel as the boost rises so you dont end up overfueling at lower revs
*Gen II exhaust manifolds will bolt onto a 3L
2-LTE is a bascially a Gen II 2-LT with an electronic fuel pump and a whole heap of emmsisions stuff that screws up on a semi regular basis.
3L is a 2.8 litre non turbo diesal (AFIK there was no factory turbo version of this motor) but the injector pumps are interchangeable so you can readily add the boost compensator to the form a 2-LT to a 3L
5L is the 3.0 liter non turbo diesal ...

You can normally pick the turbo, manifold and piping up from here/surf site/ebay for round the $500 - $600 mark.... there was some secret squirrel pump business going on a few months ago, brand new genuine toyota injector pumps for about $350.... not sure if its still going on... but depending on age and condition... probably another $500 for the pump.

I recently purchased an entire CT20 turbo for $250 off ebay .. was another $50 to get it shipped. That was everything, induction pipes elbows oil return etc.coxy321 wrote:How much would you guys expect to pay for: CT20,2LT exh. manifold & injector pump??? Just to give me an idea....

If you need any bits and pieces I can see what I have as I aleady had all those bits and only needed a new turbo as mine was stuffed.
You may also do well to check out the "surf site" http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au .. stuff turns up on there pretty regularly

Thanks for the offer love_mud. I've got my eye on a few bits and peices around the traps, there's a bit of stuff or the surf/4runner forum too.
As far as exhaust manifold compatibility, the only real difference between them is the ones with the 3L head?? So as long as i get one (series I or II i'm guessing) off an earlier 2.4, without the electronic pump, it'll all fit up.
Fitting an earlier manifold onto a 3L head involves some stud relocation of some description i've read somewhere.
Thanks for all of the informative replies to my dumb Q's guys,
Regards - Coxy
