GQ Buggy build up, need some ideas

Post by Offroad-Events »

Good mornin' Ladies and Gents !
I need some ideas and input..........
I can get a grab on this GQ shorty for 500$

This poor little thingie was parked behind a 20 ton Komatsu earth mover  while he backed up.
The frame is ok, the axles are ok, only the front sheetmetal is bend up to the firewall. Even the engine, a RD28T slug, is still ok with only the diesel pump mount being bend.
My plan is as follows:
Rip out the RD28 and go SBC V8 350 cu.in. fuel injected with a TH700 and Marks adaptor kit to the stock Nissan tcase. Selling the old engine and tranny will not only bring back the money for buying the Patrol, it'll also pay for a lot of other stuff.
Next would be converting the tub to a buggy. The firewall and original floor has to stay to keep it street legal over here. Any pics where someone built one off a Patrol ?
If all fails I might even consider only tubing the front and keep the rest as is.
So gimme input please !

Wendle had a GQ buggy that then NAM had. There should be details about the buildup on here, probably in the members section

For sure !
The RD28T was the only avail. engine in Germany in the GQ and with the longlivity (is that a word?) of it you can sell a used one for at least 2 grand and the tranny for 1500$ min. :D :D :D

My buddy who works as chief mechanic at the shop where the Patrol is at right now checked the frame and suspension today. All is straight !!
The impact was pretty high up, so only sheetmetal, radiator and the diesel pump mount are damaged

FJ40 body would be cool  but getting one that isn't rusted to death is impossible over here

I did the 800km roundtrip yesterday and picked it up. Just put it in my shop and did a first check. Frame ist straight, axles are straight, only front sheet metal is gone up to the firewall. LHS fender inner and outer can be restored, front mask and RHS inner and outer fender has to be replaced. As it looks now I'll keep the body and may only tube the front and replace the RD28 with something V8'ish :D
And yes, there IS a factory locker in the rear

Same problem here getting a FJ40 body that isn't rusted to death....

Get a fibreglass one, or make a fibreglass one... Or Just do like Carltons old one and take the body off and weld tube to the chassis

Fiberglass ones are avail. over here, but 4500$$$$$ is steep !
I called around yesterday, sheet metal parts to fix front and inner fender are 500$ from Nissan. I do have 2 good fenders laying around so I might go down this path to keep it street legal and tube my MQ :D

There is a cast of thousands, they could easily have righted the vehicle!@!

Also it looks like you came out of it fairly cheap..

i.e. the windscreen appears intact???!!!

keep driving it until the GQ is on the road then beat the mq!!

Actually it was like a slow motion flip it over :D
We had one of these night speed obstacle competitions and I hammered the MQ thru the course as if there's no tomorrow, actually running best time and hitting 1st place. Somewhere on the course the front left shock broke and a bit later we lost 4WD due to a grenaded free wheeling hub and I had to go faster over the obstacles to compensate the missing 4WD. We went thru the last gate which was the finish line, I looked in the mirror to see if I passed it and in this moment I flipped the truck in slow motion
My g/f and me were doing ok, laughing at such a dumb roll like hell, and body damage is only minor. The front left fender and grille is somehow dissorted as is the front clip. Pillars, door, mirror, glass etc is all ok, not even a dent. Helps to roll on soft sand
At least I rolled it behind the finish line and we still won the competition with 50 seconds better time than the second ( a dual locked LR 90) on a 3 minute course.
And yes, the MQ is and was always the beater !
