my question is can you use argon for welding mild steel as i want to weld ali and dont want to hire two bottles.

Yes you can.
The hiGHer the CO2 the harder to get penetration (to use the word)

Other way around. Straight co2 will give alot better penetration, but the weld apperence will be not as good and spatter levels will be significantly greater.

So it depends on what you are welding and what is its purpose to whether argon will be sufficient

have the metal as clean as possible get the right arc length and it should weld ok
