Ebay Turbo for TD42.
Ebay Turbo for TD42.
Ok fellas if you can help me out here much appreciated.
Its time for the TD42 of mine to go from the N/A slug it is to a bit more power by stucking a hair dryer on her (turbo )
I have a friend from the forum here ( you know who u r) who is going to do me a manifold for me (weld on a flange plate to a custom manifold) but i have to choose the turbo and the flange pattern,
What i want to know is i ain't going for a garett turbo simply because of the cash they want for them, have seen some turbo's on Ebay for less, and for what i do (weekend warrior 4WDing) i can't really see the point in speding into the $1800's just for the turbo itself.
I want to know if anyone can send me some links or tell me what to look for in regards to what would give good power and torque for the TD42 without having to rev it up real hard to get it onto boost or have it spool up well too early, would like to to be on boost at around 110K's on the freeway with still a bit more to go rather than run it out, want to go up hills in 4th or 5th rather than 3rd.
Any help or links to a turbo that would suit would be great as i am new to the turbo scene, Gas is no problem, can tune a gas setup without problems, but finding the right turbo for my thing, i am so not there yet
Thanks

In my breif stint with a turbo repairer I saw lots of e-bay crap turbos, they look the part and most appear to be a T3/T4 hybrid, they have large comp wheels and housings and small exhaust housings, this is great if the turbo has 360 degree thrust or is a roller, otherwise it will fail. I saw one last a weekend of racing in a Silvia, another on a 1HZ last 3 social drives. The cost to repair exceeded the turbo cost. If you insist on buying an ebay turbo, get it pulled down and fitted with 360 degree thrusts and fully checked and ballanced, it will probably cost $300 or so but is better that $1200 to fully rebuild a rooted core.

if you want to do that , that would just kill a cheap turbo i reckon to have it constantly on boost on the highway, i dont know thats just my decision, get the full specs printed out on a few ebay turbos and take it to RCA and see if he can tell you wich one would be suited for the application of driving you want, and then take the printouts of the one he said to a turbo joint and ask the dude there if he can install the 360degree thrust as PGS 4WD said and get a quote and work out if its going to work,
me personally have moved off the turbo idea as i have found the new love of my life????? a 6.5l chev v8 diesel for $5k ready to run

wasn't gunna get it for the manifold, just the turbo, just wanted to know if those specs of a turbo would be what i would want for my TD42.
I think i might just bite hte bullet and get one of those turbos u sudgested PGS 4WD for around the grand mark, sounds actually good, was hoping to get one for $1000 or less.
but thats always the dream, Next the manifold
