hilux charging at 16.5v

hi i recently replaced my old dieing starter motor in my ln106 hilux and now its charging at 16.5 to 16.9v is my regultor now stuffed or is the replaced starter causing this the old starter i was getting a charge of 12.5v to 13v max
any help will be greately appreciated

for gods sake dont drive it around while its charging at that voltage, or u will be up for a bit of damage, change ur reg for starters and check ur earth straps.

Hi dave, as bazooked posted, don’t go for any drives until you find and fix the problem.

Most things in you vehicle can actually safely take this voltage but your battery(s) can not tolerate this sort of voltage for very long before they are irrevocably damaged.

You will obviously need to start the motor while trying to track down the problem. You can do so but only for short time periods and preferably while everything is cold. Cold batteries can tolerate a slightly higher voltages.

Also, as bazooked posted, start by checking your earth connections, especially as the starter motor was changed, there is a good chance that’s where the problem may be.

thanks for the replies guys. just a few questions before i go seaching in the morning if the earth straps are fine what else do i look for and how do i check them. i didn't think the starter could effect it this way.

Sometimes a poor connection will be hotter than usual , battery terminals should not get hot , so see if any of these are loose , as warned , don't run engine for too long , cheers Paul.

Changing the starter motor should not affect the charging system changing the alternator will. Check all the connections between the alternator and regulator make sure there clean. Because your regulator is not working you will have hi voltage. If you need to use the vehicle turn on the lights and fan it should bring the voltage down to a safer level 14v to15v

hi all thanks for all the help i have solved the problem and it was one of those simple things you never think off. I changed the battery in the multimetre and what do you know its reading 13.6v while the car is running. this seems a little low but hey its better then 16v.
