PLEASE HELP!! ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE A DUEL FUEL CRUISER

Post by piglet »

 I am wanting to buy a Landcruiser but not sure which way I'm going to go in regards to the fuel. What I would like to know from other owners of a duel fuel (petrol/gas) cruiser is if they are happy with it, have they experienced any problems, what to look for when one is buying one, and anything I need to know so I can decide which way I'm going to go. Oh yeh, and when looking to buy a duel fuel, what sort of K's should I avoid. Not sure how long these last for but when is the time that these start to break down. I know roughly about diesels but I need to get some tech info about petrol/gas so I don't buy the wrong one.
THANKS

Petrol gas is fine, I've an 80 series and I dynotune/mechanic for a living, the main thing to watch is the cylinder head, they do wear exhaust valves, particularly if the head has never been reco'ed with hardened valves. Keep an eye on the exhaust valve clearances keeping them at the maximum clearance to maintain the valve/head life. Gas burns a little hotter so the exhaust valves are a little hotter, they expand(grow) a tad longer and need a little more clearance.

I have a 1993 4.5 80 series auto that I put on LPG and its great. Apart from less power, you wouldn't know the difference. It runs smooth, doesn't get warm in hot weather. It extends the touring range by keeping the main petrol tank and adding LPG where the auxilary tank was.
The auto uses a fair bit of LPG in City driving, especially running 285/75/16's but does pretty good on a country run.

The Cylinder head is the only concern unless its the V8 :?:
If its a 100series you can fit two gas tanks on the sides, thus keeping 2x fuel tanks or 3x gas tanks and 1 fuel tank.
If its a 6 cylinder i do the valve clearences every 80 000 to 100 000kms
shims are expensive
yes only your exhaust valves are effected
If its a V8, i have heard of plenty blowing up

Yes, PGS 4WD hit the nail on the head. Cheap to run etc. I have a 97 40th Ann with LPG (nearly 10 year old system). Bought the truck late last year. Just had major service done (valves adjusted etc). Told exhaust valves are stuffed beyond shimming, now I need to reco head. Been told $4000 to do properly!!!!

my old man has a duel fuel 80, he bought the 80 about 6 years ago with gas already fitted. He has adjusted valves every 2 years or so. He also set up valve saver (flash lube) on a drip feed soon after he got it. This should help stop VSR a fair bit so might be something to consider for 80s on gas.

I have a 94 75 series with the 4.5litre.

It has had gas since it was born and has just gone past the 400,000 klm mark and no signs of dieing yet at all.

I do not notice any difference in power between petrol and gas.

I have only had it for six months so have no idea of the service history but I am certainly not complaining, I couldnt be happier.

Fuel consumption.........remembering this is a fully work loaded truck.......I get about 20 l to the 100klms on petrol and about 25-27 l to the 100ks on gas which translates in terms of dollars to about 15c a klm for gas which is awesome...........at 1.30 a litre on petrol your paying 13 cents a klm if you can get 10litres to the 100klms.........yeah right.

Its almost twice as cjheap to run as my old 4 cyl jackeroo.

I run 1/4 tank of petrol through after every tank or so of gas.
