Rodeo wheel studs
Having major issues snapping off wheel studs on my 01 rodeo LT dual cab. Comes standard with 205 16's but am running 245 16's on Prado 8" rims. Is this a common issue with this rim offset, as the LT sport comes with 245's standard, or is it a problem for all?

DEFINITELY not a problem for all. I believe it to be rim offset related. I have been running 265 70 16's on factory 7½'s without incident.

Rim offset will load your studs more, but if my old zook studs can hold swampers on big offset rims, rodeo studs should be able to handle your load. Are you using a rattle gun to tighten them, or a torque wrench? Does the champher (sp?) on the wheel nuts match the stud holes on the rim surface?

Im thinking it might be that the rim isn't centring properly on the hub surface, and/or
possibly that the taper on the nuts does NOT match the taper in the rim, causing it to vibreate and come loose,
when loose, on the front or back its loading up the studs hardcore and breaking a couple...
My brother had a similar problem running the wrong alloys for his car, with dodgy wheel nuts, and massive offset rim/tyre combo

hands and mums dont count!!!
yeah the front hubs have the centre spigot, and it is smaller than the Toyota ones. the rear has no spigot at all. But in saying that I have had landcruiser wheels with 33's for a couple of years with no probs (that was before the SAS)

Front rims only. Not breaking them when driving but when swapping tyres. They seem to bind up as you are undoing them and eventually lock up completly. I then can't move them at all and have to snap them off to get the rim off. Doesn't matter if they are done up with a wheel brace at home or a rattle gun at a tyre store, they still bind up. The nuts are not coming loose and i am not overtightening them. Last occurance was when I was changing front pads only two weeks after had new tyres fitted at a store. They broke two studs on one rim and replaced all six with brand new after market ones. I saw them do the nuts up with a torque wrench. I then broke three at home two weeks later taking then off with a wheel brace, No offroad work at all.
Will be checking the taper on Holden nut to the Toyota one though.

If the nuts are binding on the thread, make sure you are using the correct pitch on the threads. Also, just cause you use a bar instead of a gun to do them up, dont mean you didnt cross thread it. If they are breaking that bad, something is deffinatley not right wit heither the aftermarket stud, the nuts, or the person weilding the tools. I worked for Holden for years, and only saw about 4 snapped wheel studs on rodeo's.

Do the Prado rims have a taper at all? I know for a fact with genuine Toyota car alloys there is no taper and it relies on the mag style nut with integrated washer to hold it central. This may cause problems.

Coming in a bit late I know (have not been on here for a while) I had problems with nuts getting stiff on the studs & eventually shearing the studs off. Got an enginner mate to measure up the nuts and it turns out the ones that were stiff had actually crimped down to a smaller inside diameter at the taper - he reckons the steel in the nuts was probably a bit soft.
So anyway, we ran the appropraite pitch 12mm tap down the stiff nuts and they spun up just fine with finger power. I keep the tap handy and whenever I find a nut that wont go on easy by fingers only I run the tap down it - been doing this for about the last 3 years and have not done a stud in that time.
