80 series to HZJ75 chasis swap

Post by baddboy »

Am weighing up options for suspension upgrade. Coil over / normal coil etc. Have got the opportunity to get an 80 series rolling chasis and am wondering if anybody has done a swap or if anyone has any ideas, comments or details on such a swap???

Cheers in advance!!

I have a mid wheel base cruiser that has been retrofitted to an 80 chassi, its still running standard 114" inch wheel base(80) under the 73 series the approach and departure angles are great.
My cousin has a 75 ute body fitted to a bundera chassi (coils allround)
its still a work in progress but its a neat job and only the 2x rear mounts for the back of the cab had to be moved and re welded on the chassi.

Gday Ben. I am soon going to put my midi onto the 80 chassis. Could you please give me some info on problems incured, what you would do differently etc.
Some questions:
1.Did you move the tub back so that you dont have to cut so much out of the rear wheel arch.
2.What did you do cab mounts wise to make it all fit. (can you remember)
3.Did the rear tank fit in without any worries.
4. if you moved body back did you move engine and gearbox. If so how did you mount g/box.
5.Did you use 73 or 80 g/box. If 73 did it bolt to 80 crossmember without any worries.
6.do you have any pics of the conversion. Some side shots so I can see how it all lines up, and also some progress pics.
I know someone who has done it to a 75, but am keen to get info from someone who has done it to a middy.
Thanks in advance.
Dave.

A bloke on the sunny coast. He used a mixture of 75 and 80 cab mounts.
He moved the cab back on the chassis about 100mm, so 35s and 37s will fit and flex with no worries. He also did it so the front bar and winch could mount out of the road for aproach angle.
To do this he cut the engine mounts off and made up a gearbox bracket so the engine and gearbox could be moved back the 100mm.
So the cab mounts looked factory and did not protrude above the top of the chassis he needed a 2" cab lift. (not a real problem, I dont think).
The only other thing that I can think of that he needed to do was to shorten the steering rod between the steering box and the firewall.
He has also made up a mould that he can make a wider version of the factory flares, to cover the wider track.
They look great, I didnt even notice that they were not the standard factory item until he pointed it out.
Oh yeah and he also shortened the rear of the chassis so he did not have to much overhang.
Cheers.
Dave.

In QLD? Doing it is not the problem. Passing it is.
