Questions on doing a V8 conversion on a GQ patrol

Post by not stock »

I have a 1993 RB30 under powered patrol.I am currently looking at a V8 conversion to suit LPG. I am thinking of either a 308 or a 350 with gas research mounted on top. The question that I have is would the smaller RB30 gearbox and transfer hold up with the power gain , or would I have to get the 4.2 box /trans/tailshafts for the power upgrade?

Next question

Is it easier to put a late model injected V8 and adapt LPG to it or stick with the old school setup?

the only difference between injected and not is the injection, if ur goin gas theres not much point to an injected motor unless u are running petty and lpg, if u go straight gas its all but injected anyway, get some electronic igniton and ur away, u just need to figure out if its worth farking around with the electrics on an injected motor (or paying someone to $$$), or go with the simplicity and slightly more erratic, drop it in and go carby donk.

as for the box ull probably be able to trade your box and transfer for a 4.2 box and transfer at a wrecker, i picked up a 4.2l one for $650 from a wrecker. sold my 2.8l one for 500

Well if you run the older motor.. you pretty much have to run strate gas to meet emissions laws.

I also think this would be easier on the older motor.. far less elctrical stuff to sort out.

Secondly.. I would think you might have to look into the 4.2 tranny, not sure if there are adapters out for the smaller box.

You have to comply with emmissions of either the motor or the car, but must be whichever is later........only if your going to engineer it :D

Only difference?? so roller camshafts, better heads, better manifolding don't count??

If you can go EFI, as cloughy said about roller camshafts and alike, you also have 3D ignition maps and fuel maps, o2 sensor for closed loop economy, technology is ace.

You want low rpm torque as well as HP, its hard to beat a V8, unless you're doing a turbo V8 like me. I'v e had 6cyl turbos and they are ace but a little more difficult to drive in some off road situations.

I need towing power as well as more grunt for when i go bush. I only ever run LPG as I have a rather big gas tank. Thanks for your input.
