Tailshaft Vs Cross Member (GQ)

Post by ben85n »

I know its no secret that the tail shaft in the back of GQ's and probably GU's tend to kind of grind themselves away on the cross member at full droop. Mine has done it a bit with a 3" lift.

Now that the 5" lift is going in its going to get even worse.

The tail shaft has already been reveresed but it still hits. And i dont know how keen i am on heating up the cross member and bashing it in a bit to get maybe 10mm more clearance.

My question is how do you get around this? I want to get some big flex happening but the length of my shock, thus the length of my droop is going to be limited by the tailshaft grinding away at the cross member and potentially causing greater issues.

I think im going to have the same problem on the front driveshaft as well. Im going to give it a bit of a massage though so shouldn't be as bad, although who knows once the X-link goes in???

Cheers Ben

i have the same problem but only when i get airborne
i have thought about spacing the gearbox up but might cause vibration issues with the tailshaft

I massaged the front cross member and had a boiler maker mate cut and weld a small piece out for the rear tail shaft to clear. With a 4 " lift i have no more probs.

Well i was thinking of maybe massaging the rear cross member to just give it that little bit more.

But my other idea was........

Put the car on a hoist, and let the diff drop down so the tailshaft is resting on the cross member.
Then Lift the diff up so the tailshaft is just clearing (10mm) the cross member.
And put a limiting strap from the top of the diff pumpkin to the cross member above the diff. Maybe weld a bit of chain in there at the right length, thus eliminating the chance of the tail shaft ever coming in contact with the cross member.

This would still allow as much flex as you like.......

It might even work on the front diff too, combined with alterating the front cross member.

What do you guys think?

i have 6" coils on mine and very long shocks..... i can change out a coil on full droop, and my tail shaft doesn't rub after turning it around. The front one did, until i chopped a piece out of the gearbox mount riser.
There is no "I" in Team, but there are 5 in Individual Brilliance
