Hilux diff swap

Post by lump_a_charcoal »

Hey Y'all...

I am planning to do a Hilux diff swap into my 92 sierra, which already has a spring over, and new springs.

I want to know what I will need for it?

Obviously a pair of diffs, and possibly different length shocks, but what else?

I am going to make up new spring perches for the lux diffs.

Is the Hilux tailshaft better to use than the sierra one?

What in terms of hooking up handbrake ?

Does the hilux diff have a 1 into 2 brake line?

What about steering rods?

Anything else I need to purchase before hand?

Thanks in advance...

A lux diff swap says that as a minimum you will be running 33s so I would also look into getting some sort of power steering system as it will suck without it.

Standard lux tie rod will do but you may need to get a draglink made up depending on what you do with your steering.

Personally, I would also run a seal kit and new bearings through both diffs as it is a shitload easier to do when they are not under the car. Do the brake pads/shoes too while you're at it.

For either of the shafts you will need to build a tcase/pinion flange adapter or re-drill the tcase/pinion flange in order for the bolt holes to line up.

if its wt some of the older lux shafts bolt straight up i believe.toyota corona power steer is as easy as it comes .

Yep I left powersteering off the list, but I am planning on fitting it...

I was thinking of strengthening the diffs too..

Any more suggestions?

Unless your getting real extreme I dont think you will need to strengthen the diffs. I think the transfer flange centre hole will have to be enlarged to use lux tial shafts. I have lux tie rod and overkill high steer ( will need to enlarge ball joint hole in pitman arm. Longer brake lines. I ran mine without p/s for awile with 33s at 10psi the missus could still drive.

What about rotating the diff centres? Is it a necessity for the front one?

Basically cut the ends off the diff, rotate the diff centre a few degrees (so the pinion is pointing more towards the Tcase) and weld it back together.
It keeps your steering geometry right, and can give a better drive shaft angle...

Oh, you mean a knuckle cut and rotate. That will depend on what your caster will end up at when you have the diffs in at ride hight.

When you said rotate diffs, I thought you meant swap the front and rear centres, because the rear probably has more wear. I still think this is good idea (unless its never going to be out of 4WD, then its almost pointless). One of the great bits about hilux axles, front and rear centres are interchangable. :)
