Hi, looking into doing a splice with a gq housing and centre with the front on my 100....
what is required with the gq centre to fix the 100 axles, is the spline the same.

Front diff
I have just had my 80 series done. Used a GQ Airlocker with 80 series side gears. Apparently there is a bit of machining required to make it fit. Cant say for the 100 series, but the 80 series axle was too big to fit the centre.
I believe the differences between the 80/100 series diff centres and the GQ diff centres include axle spline count and the axle centre line is also different. PM 80UTE on here as I know he has done quite of few of these front end set ups for 80's and 100's with excellent results. I think uses a GQ centre into an early Yota housing and the rest is original 80/100 gear.

Yeah I know, but that includes an airlocker and diff ratio's. The actual fab work cost a lot less. Until recent changes in the rules [Xtreme Open class] they were not allowed. So all the GQ Patrols running are still running GQ Diffs not GU? I would have thought most were running GU diffs.
And what about fester? He runs a GQ or GU front diff in his 80 series.
And really there is no difference in what Pete has done. You cant class what Pete has done as not being a diff swap.

heaps of cars run in this comp with diff swaps! there was or is a catorgry that MMM was trying that was aimed at standard type cars and as such he wouldn't allow diff swaps. As far as I know they all still run the same tracks, would be something along the lines of the under 3litre class he used to run but with more restrictions to the modifications to the car.

Tony, basically the reason I went this path is to try and keep it semi road friendly and to the eye, standard(ish). I also wanted to be able to run toyota axles, CV's etc etc. As soon as the money tree recovers a little, I will go Cromo Longs and axles.
I did seriously consider the mog option as well, as it would not have cost all that much more to go that path. But at the end of the day, I use my rig mainly recreationally and in some competition. Of late I have been doing less and less competition work so the Nissan/ Toyota hybrid seemed like the logical choice to handle the 38's yet still retain driveability on road.

No worries Pete sorry if you thought i was knocking you as i wasnt. Mogs are defianatly not the answer. But a D60 is no different on the street to what you have now. And as they are usually custom built it should be compliable in your vehicle so it wouldnt matter how stadardish it looked.
Having said all this you would still be a long way from fitting one of Solid axles Diffs after purchase price of around 5K. You still need to set up steering and link mounts which could easily cost another $1500 to do it right.

No worries Tony, I didnt see it as knocking but merely constructive criticism. At the end of the day we are all on a learning curve. I was offered a set of D60's without ratios or lockers for $5500 which sounds a bit more than what you are suggesting. as you say by the time I did steering, links etc the cost would have been a fair bit more. Im actually about to do it again. And with a front axle just because i allready have most of the parts lying around. But i know in the long Term i will be calling Danny at Solid to order a custom front diff.
5K for what Solid is selling is unbeleivably cheap. 12 months ago you would have payed 10K for a similar set up to be built here in Aus.
I played with Dana front end stuff ( Dana 44 ) in the late 80's and it was ok but a maint pain in the a*s. In deep soupy mud the axle tubes would fill upto the axle seals near the diff centre and if ever you wanted to pull the axle's out there was no way of getting them back in with filling the diff housing with mud. ( complete diff strip down and steam clean)The brakes were crap and ball joint type king pins ??????. I was making bronze bushes for the axle unit's ( before CTM's existed ) and it was still crap. When the 80's came out i soon built a custom front with 80 C/V's for my V8 75 series and never looked back. If longs had been available then it would have been an easy fix just fit a set and you have a tough front end. With 80's and a rear track rod you need the High pinion front diff so some thing had to be done to replace the Hilux size diff . I started building up the custom GQ/80 front diffs over 8 years ago and have done heaps with excellent results. Ive built up a few with Longs C/V's and axles recently and havn't heard of a break yet. Im not implying there tougher than a Dana 60 but the brakes are far better bearings and hubs are on par but the enclosed knuckle is far better for deep mud etc ( less maint but messy ). I have broken C/V's when abused but everthing has a limit when there a B/Block under the bonnet wanting to keep the 38's turning. I will be investing in some Longs C/V's and axles soon when my supply of new Jap made C/V's is used up so im keen to find how hard i will be able to push it with some Longs.
