I'm trying to be cheeky this week and pick up an 80 and take it bush that weekend. Currently a 'runner calls my driveway home, but a 91 GXL Diesel (stock, soccor mum) is destined for the driveway come wednesday night. (thank your god or deity)
What I would like to know in simple terms is this..
I want to go away this weekend (vic high country) in it, or I've gotta take the bloody 'runner. I also want/need new wheels to replace the stock road gear. I'm happy to chose the brand (BFG Mud, cooper STT, MTR), and the rim style (ROH sunny variation), no worries. What I do need help with is sizes...
Will be going 2"-3" spring lift in next few weeks, but won't have time before (obviously). Have read that scrubbing will be an issue at reasonable articulation, but can I be really gentle for a few days off road? Or am I sh]t out of luck?
Is it possible to give a categorical answer for what size tyres and what size/offset rims I will be chasing over the phone, or is it one of those 'how long is a piece of string' questions??
Thanks for any/all advice I can get, as this is a bloody handy forum. Maybe one day I'll have something useful to offer in return...

This is a new one on me, why 16"? For giggles, I did a search through that beaurepairs mob, and their system came back with 16 in as standard...?!
legalities attached to changing wheel diameter, are there any?? Many posts I've read, from crusier owners, has them on 15". Whats the story, or rather, where can I find the story?
SURELY someone has been down this path before, not everyone can be experts when they're born, I can't find a thread that covers it recently tho.

In short, pre 1992 80 series cruisers came standard with 15 inch rims. They had smaller brakes. When the 80 was given the 1fzfe (4.5L), they upgraded the brakes. Subsequently 15 inch rims no longer fitted, and 16's became the standard.
If you are only looking at a 2-3 inch lift, 285/75/16's would be ideal, or a 33inch tyre in a 15. Horses for courses. They are equivalent.
They will also fit with no lift, and shouldnt really scrub. Anything bigger, and you will have problems.

If you want a spare 60 for bits-

I run 265x75x16 bfg muds for road tyres.
I had 3in Ridepro springs and shocks and castor bushes fitted
and now i run 35x10.5x16 silverstone extremes as my play tyres,
I also had 50mm bump stop spacers fitted so that stopped any rubbing
An awesome set up, I am very happy with it.
I got it done at Glenmount 4x4 in Mt Waverley.
Kent down there seems to Know his shit.
