Seperating Inner Axle from CV (Birfield) HELP

Guys

Need to split some CV's (Birfield Joints). This is the best thing I have found to help so far.

The question "Should I dismantle the CV to clean and repack it?" is often asked. Well, it's up to you. The inner axle is held in the CV "star" by a round section circlip. This circlip must be sheared to remove the axle. The normal way to remove the axle is to hold it in a vice and pound the crap out of the CV joint with a soft (but heavy) hammer. In many cases the circlip will be expanded a little and sometimes is so tight that the CV will not separate without shattering the star.

What is the best way to break the C-Clip so the inner axles wil seperate from the Birfeild. from above should I clamp the inner axle in the vice and bash the CV joint to break the C-Clip (i.e. bas the two axles away from ech other ?)

One way I've heard of is to use a suitable sized section of steel pipe
place axle into pipe. with pipe contacting internal clip.
lift pipe up vertically into the air and slam down!
This does work sometimes

Spoke to a mechanic mate. Put the axle in a vice and used a 4pound hammer, 2 hits it was off. Just dosnt feel very nice smashing it.

When i hit them apart i use a large brass punch or soft hammer does the trick

put the axle in some tube (32mm i think) and lift the cv and tube then drive both into the ground...works well done it heaps, twice last week

Always drive against the internal race to avoid damaging the housing or cracking the cage.

Or just damage them and ring us for new ones!
