pto winch shear pin
pto winch shear pin
hey all
broke the shear pin on my gq pto winch the other night and have called various shops including nissan about getting a replacement but no such luck. i have searched on here and the closest i got was a guy buying it from some bloke in NZ a year or two ago. so was wondering if anyone could help me with either getting a replacement(s) or getting one of those clutch setups that i have read in a couple of the posts on here.
cheers

do yourself a favour and just get a mild steel bolt and put in it, i ran my winch for 2 years with a high tensile bolt and never had any problems youll never hurt the gears as long as u use the right oils and there is 2 shear pins anyway assuming u still have a standard one, if ur really keen to get the right one buy yourself a piece of 6 mm copper bar however i wouldnt recommend this or nissan shear pins because they shear too easy and at 7 bucks a pop its a bit exy if u use ur winch for what they were made for.
Pointless if you run 2 shear pins, you only need one in the front which is easiest to get to, otherwise its a PITA having to find which has gone.
Yes you can run a bolt instead of a shear pin, and people do. People also blow the worm gears in the winches due to overloading them too. Your choice really.
I ran a bolt in mine, but took it out when I realised I was putting too much strain on the winch. Only found out when the truck was stalling while winching

nissan said straight up that because its an import he cant help me. couldnt find it on the computer so means no help. what were the custom made ones made out of and r u still able to get them?
gnome, i read the other discussions about using bolts and it kinda put me off, id rather replace a little pin every time it breaks instead of a worm gear or something more costly. unless i have no luck then bolt it is. last resort but.
thanks

I had a PTO on my old shorty. It used the factory GQ PTO with a Powerauto winch drum (could have even said 'thomas'). But when I needed some spares I just went to Powerauto in Dandenong and got a handfull of spares. No doubt there is a mob up nth that can help out. Try a company that does towtruck winches. They should be able to help out.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
this is not really constuctive for the post, but if a dealer tells you to go away just because the car is imported, i would got else where - they obviously dont want your business.
there is a young bloke here in adelaide in one of the nissan dealers who is in to jap R32's etc (import stuff) & he is great to deal with. i had a few dealings with him while looking for pahty/terrano stuff.

In case you guys didn't know Nissan has a policy these days where you can not buy parts from them for a vehicle they didn't sell in your country. It is a bunch of bullshit and a big pain in the ass for some of us Patrol owners...
A grade 5 bolt will work just fine. Carry a handful and your probs are solved.

since when? both village nissan at redcliffe and metro nissan at lutwyche carry parts for safaris and for the import skylines that have different parts, the bulk are ex acacia ridge aswell, not ex japan. both these dealers run a separate fast system for imports, as well as a fast system for the aus spec vehicles.

I am not syaing every dealer is that way, as your examples show. But I have personally been told the parts man could get fired for selling me parts. I.E me buying Patrol parts from Nissan Austrlia and I live in the USA. In fact I have been told this numerous times from dealers in both Aus. & NZ...
Several times I arranged everything and as soon as the parts man found out I live in the USA they would not return my emails or phone callls. Nadda, nothing, zero, zip. But that hasn't stopped from getting parts...
