As previously mentioned I am looking to buy a Rocky or Feroza and doing an engine swap for a hilux engine.
Now the rocky's we get here are all fitted with a Toyota 4y 2.2 ltr petrol engine and I have found out that a hilux engine is an almost direct replacement with bellhousings etc all matching up so it would be an easy and relatively cheap swap, the same goes for our Ferozas that are fitted with a 2.0 ltr Toyota 3y engine.
My question is this, we also have some 1.6 ltr Daihatsu HD engined Ferozas, does anyone know what this engine conects to and whether it is compatible with a Toyota engine?
I think (from my research) that the Hilux is a W56 bellhousing which is compatible with the G52 housing of the 3 and 4 Y engines but I have no idea what the "standard" daihatsu set up is. Is it a G52 if so that would explain any weakness in the system as the W56 is supposed to be a lot stronger.
I am fairly mechanically minded but engine swapping is new territory for me....fear not I have a good mechanic who will do most of the work but its up to me to do the research before we start and i am bound to get a lot wrong, hence the possibly daft questions!
edit: I have found a post by Toyhatsu but cant view the pics, Toyhatsu it sounds like you went through a similar process, what was the final verdict on parts matching up?

Daihatsu/Toyota parts ?

Wow.... that's an interesting one. Should make your conversion easier? How I'd love to get my hands on the drivetrain out of one of those.....Shiva wrote:the same goes for our Ferozas that are fitted with a 2.0 ltr Toyota 3y engine.
The HD engine is what we get and not compatible with anything Toyota- it's the engine from the Dahastu Applause adapted to the Feroza.

Interesting, yes....total pain in the .... yes. Its nigh on impossible to find info on this combo so im hoping its a toyota engine mated with toyota running gear, not daihatsu running gear otherwise things could get real complicated real fast.murcod wrote:Wow.... that's an interesting one. I'll stay away from the HD versions if i can.
The basic plan is for a feroza with a hilux engine, great power to weight and i can take the roof off in winter but enjoy the aircon properly in the summer. failing that a tin top rocky with the same swap, perfectly fine but it'll be a pain replacing the roof after i've taken the angle grinder to it
Funnily enough I'd looked at that, the supra engines have 250+ hp and can be pumped up to well over 400hp. The problem is that they are 6 cylinder engines and legally i can only fit a 4 cyclinder. Engines swaps here are allowed but only with the same number of cyclinders as the original.mrRocky wrote:the W56 gearbox you speak of sounds like the supra motor would bolt up to it if it's the same bolt pattern as the other gearboxes it might be worth checking out alot of ppl here put supra motors in there hilux's
I have however spotted and been offered a 210hp 3SGE Beams engine (fitted in MR2, Altezza and Celicas) or a 3SGTE fitted in Celicas. Great engines, 4 cyclinder but I'm not sure yet about the gearbox etc matching up.
