high amp alternator for 60 series

Post by QIKAZZ »

Hey guys, I have a feeling my alternator is on its way out, to much mud and crap in it, anyway I was wondering if anyone would know what high amp alternator would bolt straight into my HJ60 (2H) without any mods? As a run a dual battery system and seem to be having trouble keeping both batteries full charged.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

im not sure on any of this at all, but i think that turbo diesel 100 series have a 100 or 120 amp alternator. no idea of it bolts up or not but might be worht investigating. or you could get your existing unit rewound to put put more current.

This same problem plagues all diesel owners... most commonly available alternators will fit, and then you add in an electronic vacumm pump. Details here:

From what i have seen, 1HZ model cruisers, and i would assume the 1HD** models have a seperate vacumm pump run off the fanbelt or timing belt seperate to the alternator.
Cheers,
Dan.

Wow, all that looks like a lot of work, what about adding a second alternator, either wiring it straight up to the second battery or into the main battery? Any auto elects out there that can shed some light on this idea?

Cheers

Hey Qikazz

The biggest bolt on replacement alterntor for the 2H with a vacuum pump on the back i beleive is 80Amp.

1HZ, 1HDT/FT/FTE all have a gear driven vac pump on the block, making their alternators useless unless you have an electric vac pump. correct me if im wrong

how many amp is yours at present? 55Amp or 80?

I have no idea what it is, but I know its not doing the job, I just want to know what rig to rip one off that will bolt straight in, or like I said, whats involved in putting in a second alternator.

Cheers

60series alt upgrade

Post by awb073 »

i took my alt into the local auto elec where i broke down (coonabarabran) and this top bloke by the name of barry rewound and rebuilt it for me in two hours with an output on his test bench of 108amps. this is the man you want to talk to!! his advise to me was to put a slightly smaller alt pulley on at some stage how ever at 1200rpm it will run at full capacity.
still have his details if you want them, other wise check out ebay i have seen some new 80amp units on there in the past.Hope this helps you out.
