LRA tanks on a patrol?

Post by Daisy »

Got myself a LRA sub tank to suit my GQ 2.8 turbo diesel (yes i know yes i know.. its a slug... but im savin up for an engine upgrade - maybe chev v8 diesel if lucky)

trialfitted it.. to prepare for drillin bolt holes in it.

What do i look out for???

I know the shafts a tad close.. 1 and half inches ... maybe two.... But ive seen other cars and they're alright with that sort of clearance.

*gotta remind myself.. must get a panhard bar when i raise the suspension*

The patrol has a 2 inch body lift (GQ)

Just saw one bolthole on the tank which lines up to be drilled which is right above the bl**dy tailshaft.

Prolbaby will have to remove tailshaft to drill properly. Unless one of u out there whos done it may suggest a better idea??

Anyone care to comment on their bad and good deals with those tanks??

I plan to put a 3/4 inch suspension lift within the coming months.

Lookin forward to hearing your replies.

Regards
Tom

two holes at the front lined up i think, remove tailshaft to drill hole in centre [line up with the hole that is on the top of the crossmember]
drill out the small hole in the corner bracing bracket where cross member meets chassis.
put tailshaft back in with small section towards the front.

Your 2.8 doesn't have to be a slug cos a mate has one that keeps up with my GU uni chip equiped petrol. praps something needs lookin at. I reckon they are a great smooth motor, wish i had that economy. :)

Bloody economical those 2.8s.. they still go where a n/a 4.2 diesel would go. .. still a slug all the same. Can you find out what your mate did to his patrol that kept up with yours? id be very intersted. I had thought of giving it some mods to keep it going.. eg - intercooler, and chip??????? and anything else anyone can think of??

Ok. List of mods im plannin on that engine at this stage,

intercooler - what kind do i use? - the GU 2.8 one?? is it efficient enough?? or should i be looking at other options??

Big Red - I'll do that.. any considerations to mufflers?? or should be a straight thru??? Im willin to listen to all opinions.

Chip? anyone know anything about this?? im keen on tryin anything for the time being - she will only be running 33's as im quite happy with that size and a 3/4 inch suspension lift which is sufficient enough for time being.

Now back to the topic of LRA tanks. My sender didnt come with wiring to go to the switch , so what size wiring?? 25 amp?? can anyone help me out here.

Thanks very much for all your inputs.

the wiring only needs to be the same size as the wiring that goes to the main tank.

no muffler is only noisy under load , depends on whether you want it noisy and illegal.

couple of mates have the chip on 2.8 gu's and are both happy with the improvement it made but are still unhappy with the overall power of the 2.8, if you gunna change motors why spend anything on it...put it towards the new motor.

if the tank and chassis dont sit square, put packers in between the mounts

ie. dont tighten the bolt up to pull the tank to the chassis as you will twist the tank and load up the welds on the seams

That mates 2.8 GU was off the shelf so to speak, we both at the time were running 32" A/T, through the hills etc i couldn't shake him, was always right up my arse & using half the juice i was. Used to shit me. But on the other hand i now of one that blows lots of black & is not as good. :D

Thanks for all ya info.. been interesting reading.. Im runnin this setup to make both tanks independant of each other - dual filler necks with a solenoid at the front. So hopefully it'll be in early next month.

Big Red= you're problaby right about the mods.. not worth doin to this car... I'll save up for an engine upgrade... but question is... if i bolt on a 3 inch mandrel bent pipe.. can that pipe be modified to go behind any engine? eg cut and welded up again? - just tryin to justify buyin one .

Thanks :D :D
