Hi guys,
THis is to deal with my ability to STOP with my hilux surf...it just doesn't. The wierd thing is that the tyres just lock-up all the time (I don't have ABS) but I know how to modulate the peddle.

I currently have 265 tyres on 15 inch rims which by the width should be pretty hard stoppers no? I do note that the cars got stupid drum brakes at the rear and small little discs in front.

Now my question is this, does the size of your brakes determine the lock-up point or is it purely a function of the tyres? I got 265 up front for heavens sake and my stopping is so much worst than my LS400 on 205s!!!

If I change the brakes to supra brakes will it stop my tyres from locking up so much? Or is there something wrong with my tyres (all 4 are brand new with proper pressure btw) but are semi off-road tyres.

My mind is cast back to a BBC Top Gear moment where Clarkson test the Mclaren SLR and almost got his face ripped off when he tried to brake from 200mph. I'd like that feeling and security, not some train of a surf that I'm driving now. How do I get it??? the brakes?? can't be the tyres....265!!! New!!

Anyway, any feedback would be great.

Are all 4 tyres locking up? Are you having to top up your brake fluid? When was the last time your brake hydraulics were bled? Have you actually had a mechanic check your brakes out yet or are you just seeking advice here on the net? Brakes are a serious issue, no probs asking for advice here but seriously get it checked out by a professional before you hurt yourself and/or someone else.

Haven't gone to the mechanic with the problem yet but will soon. The Surf is actually the first 4x4 I've owned and I'm just not very sure if this is just a characteristic of 4x4s that I'm not used too.

It would seem that the fronts are locking up. The brakes don't need extra fluid and have already been properly bleed.

I'm not carrying any access weight around why should the tyres lock up all the time?

I've actually just bought my first 4b in the last month, and is a 4Runner... I found the same thing, that the brakes lock up quite easily, and mine too has 4 brand spankers tyres on it. I'm putting the prob down to it being a 4b, the suspension wouldn't help matters.

As for bigger brakes, I don't think they'll help in your case. Bigger brakes improve braking force and dissipate the heat more, hence allowing better braking under extreme conditions, but if your wheels are locking up, you've already got enough pressure to stop the tyres turning... it could be hard compound tyres as they tend to lock up easier than soft compounds...

By the sounds of it it's not tyres if you can lock a 265's your going fairy good even if it is a cheap tyre when realy old they go hard but even still then they sound grip ok. mate had a similer thing with his lux just after he bought it it was a calliper bolt fell out when he toughed the pedal even the slightest it would lock that wheel that was strange but then to put another bolt in there correct one with spring washer and it worked loose again so now it locktight spring washer touqued to phucken tight and it doesn't come off it's easy to see if it's this just look on the inside of the rim for where the calliper will be hitting it or look at calliper and if it looks like somethings missing take it to the mechanic

Another Q when you push the pedal is it really soft then locks all of a sudden when you say get half way i had a corrola that did this.

The wierd thing is that if I do a gradual push on the brake then it stops fine with very minimal effort. The time when its bad is when I suddenly slam of the brakes for emergencies then it almost just immediately locks up. Kinda stupid when in an emergency you need the brakes the most.

Thats what the rolla did even after a reco master so i'll ask the guy's at the brake shop as i have to see them toomorrow anyway.

Cheers mate. I've asked on other forums too and someone has actually mentioned something about the balance of the car being the problem and how it doesn't transfer the weight of the car to the front properly. Could be the problem but I can't see how its going to work man...

i'd be quite actually very surprised if you say it's a "4wd thing" because its not. I've owned many 4bys. Shitboxs to nice rigs. and none of them will lock up as you've discribed. There is something going wrong with YOUR car. Either a shocky problem, brake cylinder or your calipers are f*cked. I did have one sieze up on my lux a few years ago and that made it pull when I went to stop. That was due to me not cleaning the salt off the brakes after too many beach runs.

Brakes are a big thing don't put it off cause you'll stuff up and put someone in hospital no probs. We're bigger cars and if we run into a little festiva we'll f*uck them up. Look into it asap or go to a brake shop and get it sorted.

Sounds like the load sensing bias valve is either out of adjustment or buggered.
Look under the back at your rear diff you will see a thin bent rod going down to the diff with a threaded adjuster on the end.
This adjusts the brake bias so the rears do more braking when you are loaded down with more weight.
This is often a problem for lifted vehicles as unless you lift the bottom mounting point by the same amount you pretty much loose all rear braking.
They also do quite commonly just bugger up too. A lot of the US guys just fit a manualy adjustable bias valve with a knob on it but in Aus that is very illegal.

I think youve got it in one Ausyota. Sounds very much like the brake proportioning valve. Could have air in the valve or as said in the last post, it could be that the rod is bent or out of adjustment. When I did the ute conversion on my 80 series, I had to muck around with the valve to get the rear brakes working. In the end I just extended the bracket a bit and they worked again.

Why would my little ae82 corrolla do the same thing they don't have one and a few mates with luxes just cut the rod or tie up out of the way and they don't lock up. Has it just happend or have you replaced something there is a rubber it's in the booster it seals the pushod between booster to master cylinder this missing or worn can cause a soft them sudden pedal so maybe try replace that or just do the smart thing and take it to a good mechanic shop or brake shop.
