Legal front bar

Post by jamespbeasley »

Hey

Does anyone know what constitutes a legal front bar in NSW ? Does it have to go the whole way across the font of the car and infront of the tyres... like this:

Or does it just have to cover the front of the chassis... like this:

Or can you drive around with no front bar... like this:

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

with that first one you would want to relocate your license plate

the second one would constitute a nudge bar which should be legal

and no bull bar would also be fine

unless common sense is ruled all three should be legal

Post by Pyrotech »

iv got a winch bar on my zook that is only just wider then the chassis.
i have been pulled over serveral times for RBT, and had the cops go over my car, and nothing has been said about the bar.

but thats not to say that it is legal...

just my $0.02

Sorry, i dont think i explained myself well...

I'm not talking about a bull or nudge bar... i'm talking about a bumper bar. As far as the pics go, i just tried to find 3 pics with cars that 1) had a bumper that went the whole way across, 2) only covered the chassis, and 3) had no bumper at all - and trying to find out what is legal.

Pyrotech - if that's the case and you only need it to cover the chassis then thats good, cause thats all i want to put on.

you alos have to be mindful of where your indicators go and that is the legality part of the question and I think the laws will differ from state on that part

Park lights, indicators, edge radius, bar angle and protrusion all take part in a legal bar.

As Grimbo said, lights are very important. I'm in QLD, so not terribly relevant, but I recently spoke to an inspector about LED indicators and parkers for my 'in construction bar'. Lights must be ADR approved for what they are replacing; i.e. ADR approved reverser cannot be used as parker etc. Next of all lights must be kept in similar configuration; i.e. inidicator cannot be on inside of parker, however one on top of other seems fine, as height is generally speaking irrelevent.

Then for bar construction itself, I know less here, but anyway: Must not angle any further forward than angle of cars front end, must not have any sharp protrusions, must not obscure lights, and other common sense stuff too.

I am not aware of any ruling on width, however there are laws regarding how much wheel must be protected by a wheel arch, someone asked this on the general tech section a few months ago about a hilux ute i think, but should be similar. Basically the bar acts as the very front part of your wheel arch, and it may not come down far enough around the front of the wheel.

When unsure, speak to an inspector, dont bother with the people in the DOT office, they'll just tell you to talk to the inspector anyway.
Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.

Got told by the Govt Inspection garage here in SA that any modification to the front of a vehicle has to be ..wait for it.....Pedestrian Friendly  and usually requires an engineers report..
