R150 or R151

Post by Grublux »

Which box would suit a 1UZ conversion best on a Hilux that is running 4.8's in the diffs, dual transfers and 36" pedes. The R151 or R150. I know it's only the ratio's that are different so just want to know which one suits the V8 better with this set up. Thanks

I think the R151 came out on Factory Turbo Diesels and is stronger
than the R150. :!: :!:
What could possibly go wrong????

Negative... R151 just has a slightly lower 1st gear and was more common behind turbo diesel hilux/surf/prado models, and N/A 78/79/105 series landcruisers as apposed to the 150 behind the Petrol V6 models. They are both the same in terms of size and strength.
Cheers,
Dan.

Sorry I stand corrected (well I sit corrected) :D :D

I was thinking H150 & H151 (oops my bad)

I think my info is correct on the H boxes but I think I'll just
shut up for now.
Cheers

I've got a R150 with commo V6, 4.3s, duals transfers and 35s. It takes off fine onroad. With duals gearing offroad isn't going to be an issue either way. I don't think it will make a great difference which one you go with, so go with the cheapest or easiest one to get hold of.

H150F is the same in terms of strength as the H151F too, it just has lower 1st and 2nd ratios.

H150F is still used behind the new V8 TD in the 7* series.

"Below is from marks 4wd adapters website"!!!!!

NOTE: late model 100 series vehicles fitted with naturally
aspirated 1HZ diesels are fitted with a R151 gearbox, this
gearbox we consider to be marginal in strength. If you
are considering a V8 conversion it should be replaced with
a gearbox from a 4.5 petrol or a turbo diesel model

Correct, for what ever reason, they thought a smaller gearbox would hold up the rigours of a 3 tonne 4wd. Ask any gearbox rebuilder in the country what they think of it   then ask the poor sods who dished out the coin to pay for toyotas mistake :bad-words: :bad-words:

H series boxes are a straight swap, all factory parts.

Dan.

The comment from Marks would only relate to fitting a V8 to a full size Cruiser etc not a Hilux. A H series is not a straight swap into a Hilux.

The R series is way more than adequate for a V8/Hilux combo.
