MQ body onto GQ chassis...
MQ body onto GQ chassis...
Ya I know what you are going to say....WTF for!?
But I live in the USA, Patrols have not been sold here since 1969. I am lucky enough to own a 1983 SWB MQ Patrol though. We can't import anything newer than 25yrs old. Thus I can not import a GQ and just be happy!
I could import a GQ but I can not get it street legal. I can however take the body off my MQ and put it on a GQ chassis and get this legal for street use. It simply gets registered as an 83 MQ!
So can anyone tell me if it is possible to put the SWB MQ body on a SWB GQ chassis!?

They might look similar from the outside, but the whole floorpan is different.
They also have the VIN stamped into the frame (both the GQ and the MQ), so it would be obvious if anyone checks.
How about getting it over in parts, bits'n pieces ? And then putting it all together with the MQ VIN as you would need to use this one anyway ?

i am curious to know why you would not be able to get a gq street legal considering some of the trucks that are built over thereRMP&O wrote:Ya I know what you are going to say....WTF for!?

If it was never sold here...such as the GQ then it does not meet EPA or DOT standards. To be street legal it must meet these standards, ie safty glass and shit like that.
Thing is a custom built rig is fairly easy to get street legal. The MQ body on a GQ chassis is a custom built rig.
But I wouldn't even go as far as to reg it as a custom vehicle. I actually wouldn't change a thing for regs, keep it as an 83 MQ...chassis vin isn't really going to matter because it would be considered an 83 MQ. A modded 83 MQ but so what no different than SoA on the diffs as far as anyone is concerned.
If I took the vin plate off my MQ and slapped it on a GQ that would be illegal. Removing a vin plate and putting it on another rig is against the law. Something to do with car theft...
Wider chassis no probs as long as the frame rails are up under the truck. Diffs stick out, sweet that sounds just fine. We have no regs on how far tires stick out in my state and it is easy enough to fit flares.
So floor pans going to be a prob?
Anyone know if it will wrok? Or can you post up measurements of a GQ chassis. I can measure my MQ up easily. Have done it with other trucks to see if the frame was bent. Plum bob, concrete floor, piece of chalk, tape measure...no big deal.

The GQ shell is basicly a MQ shell with flared guards. All the doors, windscreen, turret and bonnet will interchange. The only difference will be the wider chasis on the GQ which was mention ealier.
Hope this helps.

God of Magnificant Ideas!
Morning Ian,
The front radiator support will be about the only minor headace you'll face & its probably easier to modify the MQ side of the equasion here to pick up the GQ chassis' extra width.....
6 - 1, half a dozen the other as to which way to go here really.
As for the other mounting points, LEAVE the MQ body as it is. Cut the mounts off of the GQ chassis and make new mounts to pickup the MQ body. Its a very simple procedure to do.
The new mounts can be made from either 3"X 6" by 1/8th wall RHS cut into the shapes you want and welded to the chassis, or get the local steel fabrication joint to press up some new mounts again from 1/8th plate.
The floorpan will clear, but the gear shifters hole will need some careful work or it will look like cwap

if you search around there is a copy og the diagrams for a mq shorty on here too.
i have seen a mq ute cab on a gq and it was relatively easy except the tranmission hump was too low so it had to have a body lift to get a gq box under it
